When I was little, art that was dark and macabre both frightened and fascinated me. These kinds of images would remain in my imagination a lot longer than any other, and ended up profoundly shaping my interests and artistic styles as an adult. Among those that have stood out to me are Hieronymus Bosch (Netherlands, 1450-1516):

    Francisco Goya (Spain, 1746-1828):

And of course, H. R. Giger (Switzerland, 1940-2014):

What's some of your favorite creepy artwork (modern or classic)?

Half of the stuff Val posted looks like Attack on Titan, I think they probably got some inspiration from these.

Michael Whelan is known for making artwork for the covers of HP Lovecraft books, as well many as other sci-fi and fantasy books, but his HP Lovecraft covers are no doubt the creepiest.

The second is a depiction of Cronus/Kronos, the literal first of the mythological Titans, who supposedly ate his children because of a prophesy which stated that one of them would kill him.

Stephen Gammels' work in the Scary Stories series has greatly informed my art over the years. The work I'm doing now has been inspired by his sense of the grotesque.

I shouldn't be laughing but that guy on the right is just about to swing that baby like a bat across that woman's face.

I work with chemicals at my job and for whatever reason the warning label for environmental hazard creeps me out:

That second one looks like it's from a video game, like Silent Hill or something.

Lovin' the Goya art. His intaglio prints were pretty eerie too. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
I'm unsure what the first two symbolized. I do know that the bottom one is supposed to be an artistic interpretation of an unhappy marriage. As it was called "Of the same Flesh", which is a parallel term to man and woman becoming one flesh. In biblical terms being of the same flesh means that the other person is your partner.

If I were to make assumptions I'd say that the first two are Pride, and Apostasy respectively.

The hands resist him was a painting made in the 1970's. It was supposed to be an artists symbolic self portrait. Then It was turned into a creepypasta by the a ebay user that claimed it was hunted.

To their credit, it does look creepy. But it isn't actually haunted.
