"Merry Christmas," of course. Just hearing "happy holidays" kinda pisses me off.

Happy Holidays!! For me, it's more about the holiday season than about Christmas day. I like the cookies and the decorations and the cold weather. I loved Christmas day as a kid because of presents but now me and my friends/family are more about using the season to see each other and spend time together rather than spend money on each other. Plus I have quite a few friends who don't celebrate Christmas because they have other religious or cultural connotations for the season, but we can all agree that the holiday atmosphere is a nice one that we all enjoy. :D

I'm honestly just amazed this is still something people care about. Even if you're hardcore Christian and consider the other religious holidays blasphemous, there are two federal holidays within a week of each other, so "happy holidays" is factually correct if you're in the US. If you're not Christian, December 25th is going to happen anyway, and it may as well be merry regardless of where you live.

Besides, the holiday is celebrated by 95% of Americans, more than any other federal holiday. Christians only make up 70.6%, so over a third of those celebrating (including me) are non-Christian, and a minimum of 0.9%, or about 3 million people, celebrate despite actively following another religion. It's cultural as much as anything else, at this point.

Maybe it makes more sense in other countries. It sure doesn't here.

I don't really talk to anyone at all ever. If someone extends a holiday greeting, I generally just echo whichever they say (unless they say it in a foreign language, that is. Be a cold day in hell before I wish anyone 'mele kalikimaka' back).

We've still got Columbus Day despite, per earlier link, only 8% of Americans observing it and the guy rapidly running out of defenders. I seriously doubt one celebrated by 95% is at any risk, especially when at least a quarter of the country apparently doesn't even do so in a religious way. People aren't going to give up a major travel holiday over choice of phrase.

I always say Merry Christmas, because it's what I celebrate. If someone wants to say Happy Holidays, great! If someone wants to say Happy Hanukkah, great! But I'll always lead and respond with Merry Christmas, regardless. Not to be spiteful, but to express what I'll be celebrating.

I use both interchangeably. I never had a problem with either, and I feel like anyone having an issue with "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays" is an embittered jerk. Like, sorry for wishing you'll have a good time over the holidays dude. Guess next time I'll tell you to take a long walk off a short pier.

    Okay, serious answer is I don't give a s**t.

I generally say Merry Christmas because that's what I was raised on. It doesn't mean anything to me and I don't think it's offensive to anyone?

If anyone ever tried to call me out I'm pretty sure my reaction would be "Okay, I don't care." repeated until I escaped this person. I don't know.

I agree with echoing what others say. I could take or leave either one, though Christmas or Xmas in modern society is what I and most Americans celebrate. I get why people who work in customer-facing environments feel the need to say happy holidays. The people who want to be offended by everything outnumber or at least are more vocal than those who are offended by people who are offended by everything, thus making happy holidays the terms to less likely cause trouble.
