Actually having a lot of experience with the English language, I tend to prefer an 'I' which is followed by a single hard consonant, with next vowel being an E, to be a long vowel. Obviously this isn't official, but then again I'm still pretty sure they shouldn't have let Texans decide how to pronounce anything.

I didn't realize there was any other way to pronounce it. His Japanese name is リドリ (ridori), which is the typical transliteration of the English name "Ridley" (for example, Ridley Scott's name in Japanese is リドリー・スコット, ridori sukotto). Plus, his name is pronounced "Rid-lee" in Other M (the only time his name is ever said out loud as far as I know).

Also, apparently ridley is the common name for sea turtles of the genus Lepidochelys. You learn something new every day.

How to pronounce Ridley, as inspired by the pronunciation manual.

HAI GUYS IM THE LOSER WHO PRONOUNCED IT RIDE-LEE.

It didn't hit me until I heard people say Ridley Scott's name many years ago that I was like "Oh, wait."

I grew up with with parents who had English as their second language. This caused me to pronounce some English words erroneously having experienced their accent and logic of how they thought the English language should work. For example, I always pronounced the camera company Nikon as "Nee-con" instead of "Ni-con". I would always pick up their misponunciation of words.

One big question I always had is if neither is pronounced "nee-ther" or "ni-ther". I literally heard it pronounced both ways on a track in The Beauty and the Beast soundtrack.

That's not how the phonetic rule works, though. Vowel-Consonant-E would definitely make the I long, but that's not what you have here. Vowel-Consonant-Consonant definitely dictates a short vowel. If his name were "Rideley" or "Riley," then the I would be long; but phonetically speaking, "Ridley" pretty much has to be a short I.

^ In my experience, that rule applies to a double hard consonant almost exclusively, L is a soft consonant. Rideley doesn't follow the trends in the language - the central E wouldn't be silent and the I would be short, leaving the word to sound like riddle-ay.

I'll concede your second point, but I don't think that hard or soft consonants changes the VCC rule.
