Probably not quite as cool as the ALttP randomizer, but still pretty rad if you think SMW is getting stale after sixteen years. Simply visit the website, upload a copy of the ROM, set the parameters, and download your unique, randomized SMW game.

The Randomizer is still in development, but still has a lot of cool features. It doesn't build levels from scratch, but rather mixes up the levels already in the game. You can also randomize sub-levels and exits. Enemies, powerups, and other level properties can also be mixed up, producing a Super Mario World that is full of chaotic bullsh*t FUN!

If you mess around with this, be sure to post some results here. Maybe we can organize a race sometime.

    >two players race this
    >player 1 gets a Yoshi's Island level as their first course
    >player 2 gets Outrageous from Special as their first course
    >mfw

I would love to race this.

^ We could always share seeds... but that wouldn't be as FUN.

Yeah--I was hasty and didn't notice that it actually had seeds at first.

I'm most likely being really naive about this but I was hoping it would patch together elements from other levels to form new randomized levels a la Spelunky, instead of it shuffling whole levels across the map. It's probably a bit too early for ROM hacking to get to that point (plus a lot of levels generated that way would cause a load of unwinnable states now that I think about it), but this is cool too.

Is there a point to this with Mario Maker existing?

I feel like a SMW level randomly cobbled together by an algorithm would still be better than the average user-submitted SMM level.

Even taking those and putting them together on a proper SMW style map would make them better. Lives don't matter in SMM unless you're playing the challenge run and you suck. The incentive for so many of the mechanics is completely removed, then.

My new USB SNES controller arrived this weekend and I've been wanting to try it out, so I decided to give this a whirl. The site has a few presets of varying difficulty; I've gone with the hardest (Funky) because I'm just that radical. Let's see what this baby can do.

Already off to an amazing start.

Well, there's no pepperoni and it's not a temple, but rather it looks like a modified Butter Bridge 2. The Super Koopas are the same, but most of the ground-based Koopas have been replaced with Volcano Lotuses and Goombas.

And then the secret pipe drops me off here. YEAH AWESOME

No switch palace? Guess I'm entering the Kuso Zone instead.

"Lemmy's Mirage 2" is just Star World 1 with a Spiny here and a Wiggler there. Yawn.

Then there's "Kuso World 2", which is Chocolate Island 3 with a few Koopas swapped for Goombas. YAWN.

There's where that sneaky switch palace went!

Standard Yellow Switch Palace, up until the switch at the end shot a Bullet Bill at me. What the hell was that?

...Oh. So the Yellow Switch Palace activated the red blocks. Should've known.

Might play some more of this later.

Done with Star Wor--err, Kuso Zone for now. Gonna head back and try...

    Yeah, okay.

Sure would suck if I had a Yoshi right now.

So this level is just Valley of Bowser 1. Same Mega Moles, same Chargin' Chucks. Kind of a letdown, man.

I spoke too soon. The normal exit just took me to a room with this strangely generous Flying Hammer Bro. before dumping me back in the cave. The real exit ended up being where there was just a bonus area in the original game. Interesting.

Then there's "Emerald Temple 2", which is Valley of Bowser 3 with no major changes. Yawn.

Though I did get a rad Hammer Suit.

Oh man. I hope I'm ready for this.

Turns out it's just Donut Plains 4, which isn't very spooky. Unless you count the Fire Snakes.

More of these guys. I do appreciate their donation.

You can't tell because this is a still screenshot, but this block changes items once per frame instead of once per second like it normally does. I DIDN'T NEED A MUSHROOM.

Tackling the first castle, Pepperoni Mirage 5.

It's just Roy's Castle, but the lava has been replaced with grape soda.

The boss battle is with Larry, and... it's underwater? This actually makes the battle waaaay easier, A) you can easily dodge Larry's attacks, B) the Podoboos only spawn at the top of the screen for some reason, and C) apparently Larry gets knocked way further when underwater, so you only have to bop his head twice to knock him off the platform.

Next is "Valley of Koopas 4", which is actually Forest of Illusion 1, and...

...That's a weird place to find a key, right at the start of the level.

Wait a minute. The keyhole is still in the same spot. But I can't carry the key while floating over via P-Balloon. There isn't enough room for me to fly over with a cape while holding the key, and I can't fly over there with a Blue Yoshi because it can't carry a shell and a key in its mouth at the same time. There's no way for me to take that exit. SHENANIGANS.

Well, the normal exit opened the secret exit path, taking me to "Jungle of Illusion 2"... which is a ghost house floating in the middle of a lake.

Ahh, it's just Donut Ghost House. Let's see if I remember how to do--

THE FIRST DOOR I FOUND PLOPPED ME RIGHT AT THE EXIT.

Playing this is making me want pizza.

It's just Donut Secret 1, but the Rip Van Fish have been replaced with Yellow Koopa Paratroopas, and there are also Bullet Bills.

    ...Well, this is interesting.

Going through "Pepperoni Mirage 4", aka Morton's castle. I've discovered that hammers, as in SMB3, can destroy otherwise invulnerable foes like Thwomps and Dry Bones.

They can also damage the Koopalings. Up yours, Ludwig.

"Kuso World Z" is just Forest Secret Area with no major changes. A nice breather level.

Whoever named these areas is either a Dragon Ball fan or a Max Brooks fan.

It's Chocolate Island 1. All those Dino Rhinos.

"Kuso World 5" is the Sunken Ship. ****, I don't want to do that section with the Boos...

Oh. The pipe just takes you to the secret area from Donut Plains 1. Free lives!

How does the evening of next Sunday, the 16th, sound?

Also if we're gonna stream someone's gonna have to explain the process to me because I've never done it before.
