I'm no expert on the Syrian Civil War or anything, but I wanted to share this neat map for anyone that might be interested and make a place to discuss the war at the same time. Here's the map:

Based on google maps with area layers to indicate territory controlled by each faction and recent events. You can go back and see old events and how control over territory has changed over time. Here in the past week or two, Turkey has joined in with the FSA to create a buffer zone against ISIS along the Turkish border east of the Euphrates.

And there's talk of a similar US-Turkey operation to take Raqqa.

Turkey's Euphrates Shield cleared out a decent buffer zone along the Turkish border over the better part of a month, though here recently some villages initially captured by the Turkey/FSA coalition have been recaptured by ISIS, some of those have been recaptured by Turkey/FSA, and some of those have been recaptured by ISIS again. ISIS hit a city on the Turkey side of the border with a rocket attack, motivating Turkey to send more special forces into Syria.

Meanwhile in Iraq, the Iraqi government has retaken Shirqat, which had been a key supply route to ISIS held Mosul, as part of the lead-up to the siege of Mosul.

The Turks and the FSA have their sights set on taking Dabiq in the next few days. It's apparently pretty important ideologically, if not tactically, to ISIS. Something to do with Armageddon prophecy and the location. ISIS has pushed in massive reinforcements to defend it.

It's kinda interesting reading the comments section of the news updates. Turks and Kurds talking **** to each other doesn't sound much different than sports fans, console fanboys, etc.

    Daesh shouldn't have anything.

Especially not a small town they're drowning in landmines because of prophecies.

The Pentagon estimates about 3,000 to 5,000 ISIS fighters still in Mosul. The number of troops in action to take it from them is between 25,000 to 80,000 according to Al Jazeera and Washington Post, respectively.

25,000 to 80,000 is less precise than what we can get for a lot of ancient battles. Any reason given for the discrepancy?

Not that I have seen. Two separate articles that don't discuss each other. Something called "Rudaw English" says around 30,000 Iraqi and Kurdish troops are involved. That number seems to come from Reuters. CNN says more than 54,000 Iraqi troops and 40,000 Peshmerga involved.

The Turks and FSA of Euphrates Shield have been doing more fighting with YPG than ISIS in the last couple days. They each want to take Al Bab from ISIS themselves.

In Iraq, ISIS launched a sneak attack on Kirkuk in the middle of the Mosul Offensive.

Stories of things like Daesh's use of people as human shields is actually beyond the scope of what awfulness I expected from them. It's a special kind of callousness.
