| Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2000 Location: California, U.S.A Gender: Posts: 9,016 Thanks: 75 Thanked 81 Times in 68 Posts | I have had my Chihuahua mix for 4 1/2 years. I had him since I was 17. I have had a few dogs before but I didn't really give a sh*t about them. This was MY dog. Now, this isn't to say I was perfect, he has gotten away a number of times before and ended up in the animal shelter. This means he was in their systems and so was the information about him and us (I know he is in there for a fact; when I showed up there they had a picture of him in their systems that they pulled up in a heartbeat for me). Due to circumstances, my dog got away about a month ago. We called the animal shelter like the next day and they were rude and unhelpful, claiming that they couldn't identify our dog and that we had to come in and identify him in person. Now, that is frankly ridiculous in itself. But it gets worse. Once we found out he was in there, my friend went there and identified him. He said he would do it and he did (albeit way late). He drove there, pointed out the dog, laid claim to him, explained the situation to them and assured them that we would come up with the money as soon as possible and they in return assured him that they would keep him there for us until we could get the money. It was about ninety bucks. Ninety bucks we didn't have on hand. By time we got the money together (or rather, just up and borrowed the damn money from a different friend), my dog was already adopted out. I am the one who went there and found out, after dealing with rude workers that we was adopted to a family in another city. Now...just after I found that out, I went to someone's house and decided to play some good ol' PS3. This is about an hour or two after I found this all out. Well, my friend and my sister went to the animal shelter after me, not knowing that I was already there. They were told something completely different. Apparently, they were told that my dog was put to sleep after biting a woman, being put in a muzzle and "freaking out and growling". They told my mom and she started crying. Then they broke the news to me. Well, after being pissed as all hell, we went back over there to find out the truth and it turns out, what they told me was in fact, true. I dealt with the supervisor, Pete, and he called the people who adopted my dog. He spoke to them in private and told me that they had no interest in returning my dog to me and that everythign was working out "fine". Okay, at this point we have been treated like trash, been lied to and had my dog wrongfully adopted by only God knows who. All they could do was, after I applied much pressure and insisted, hold onto a few numbers with my name and if it didn't work out with MY dog, they'd contact me. OH JOY. HAPPY DAY. MOTHER F*CKERS. Here are a few quotes from their website: "If your pet comes into one of our shelters wearing his or her license they will be held for a longer period of time while we make every effort to reunite you with your pet." LIARS. They'll do anything to keep me FROM my pet! "Don't give up hope!! Some pets go missing for weeks, sometimes even months, before they are found by their owners or guardians." Um, yeah, we checked the shelter a bit late but we found his ass. I guess now I can give up hope eh? "Our objectives: To provide services to the public to aid them in locating their lost animals." Good Lord, shut up! What services did you offer? Absolutely nothing! "COME IN AND SEE, SORRY THAT'S ALL WE CAN DO." This isn't a service. That is "slap you for being rude." "Losing a pet can be very upsetting and stressful for you and your pet." Nah, it was just a wonderful, delightful and enriching experience! TRUELY! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- We were wronged. Cain is gone. He was stolen. I want him back. Now. |

Anyway, that is a terrible thing for the society to do. Don't you have some records on the dog at least? Have you been to the vet or something that included documentation your dog? I'm not entirely sure what kind of papers we have on our dog since my mom keeps all that, but isn't there something that can prove what kind of dog you have, its age, and any other traits? In addition, you should be able to contact this family and inform them that it is indeed your dog I would hope. It may require co-operation from the damned people at the humane society; I don't see how they can deny you the ability to contact that family for a mistake that the society made. | |

Although you probably should also have been more careful with the dog, especially if these are the people in your neighborhood... |

But I don't know if they deal with goverment funded organizations. I could check. Lol, nobody corrected Irby about shooting Pete. I have vaccination and court papers involving him so I do have proof but to show to who? The shelter knows he was ours and anally raped our rights anyway. They, understandably, won't divulge the family's personal information; however, not even patching me through to them to speak to them personally is retarded. |

They're good to lodge complaints with, but there's really no guarantee that anything comes out of it. If your dog wasn't tagged when they picked him up, you don't have much recourse. Mistake 1: you called and expected something. Animal shelters everywhere are pretty much poorly run hellholes. The only way you're getting anything done is to go there in person. If you call 5 different times and ask the same question, you'll get 6 answers. How long between the identification and coming back with the payment? Most shelters have some time limit on how long they'll keep your "claim," and sometimes this is only like 7 days. If you're trying to pursue it further, you have to dig around and go up the bureaucratic ladder. Basically go up through the shelter chains/animal control chains until they send you elsewhere. Try to find the paper trail, get supervisors, get explanations. Honestly, you might need to contact an attorney on this one. You're not even sure what happened, let alone what possible resolution you can get. I'd probably wager the chances you have of getting your dog back are very slim, but you might be able to get damages against the city. Again, you'd have to find a local attorney. What exactly would calling the cops accomplish? You can lodge a complaint, sure, but the shelter will likely say they followed procedure and nothing will happen. They're not going to kick the door in of whoever adopted the dog and Elian Gonzalez it. |

Epic Ladynerd Join Date: Jul 2000 Location: Forteresse de Valois Gender: Posts: 24,315 Thanks: 450 Thanked 703 Times in 455 Posts | Make sure you tell whoever you end up speaking to that the shelter wrongfully told your family your dog was euthanised- this basically screams that they don't know what's going on within their shelter, and someone may have organised to hold your dog for you, only to have someone ELSE adopt him out afterwards. You can probably press them on that, because that would mean they need to get the dog back from the other family, since it was the shelter that messed up bad. I hope you get the little guy back, but be warned... the people who adopted him might turn out to be horrible and want to keep him, regardless of the fact that he's yours. And in future, do more to make sure he (or any other pets) can't get out/picked up by the ranger. |

Try to speak to only one person, but don't be a nuisance, familiarity helps both parties. Be sincere and polite and you can increase your chances of getting your pet back. Get angry or frustrated and you might as well say goodbye to the little sucker. |

I dunno, he said they're bringing him back this weekend so, if that's true, I'll have him back soon. If all goes well and I get him back, I'll try to post a pic of my dog sometime. Thanks for all the advice, it did help. |

Infact, when I went back to speak with the desk b*tch and told her what my friend said, she gave me a c**ty look and said, "Nope, everything is working out fine [with the family]." And that was, literally, all she said (in a snotty ass voice). What bothered me more than my desire to strike her to the ground, was that she refrenced no files nor even double checked with the supervisor. So, someone lied. I also joined a legal info message board and I'll be utililizing (Sp?) that soon. Honestly, it looks bleak at this point and I am quickly running out of options... If my buddy lied, he's getting his ass kicked. Anyway, I can't see why he would... Thanks for the genuine concern guys, really. Even if I don't get Cain back, I'll post a pic of him eventually, if possible (my sister somehow has a crappy pic of him on her equally crappy phone).
