I have applied to several locations. Not one has bothered to call me back. I am in desperate need of a new job. My current one is a half hour away and I get 5-8 hours a week at most. Last week I had 3 hours and this week I get 4. I make $7.75/hour but that's hardly enough. Asking for more hours is pointless because its a seasonal job which will be over soon. Since I got my debit card, I cashed my paycheck and payed for nothing but gas over the 2 week period. I cashed my next check ($20 less that the last one.) and had $50 less that last week. I AM PAYING TO WORK THERE! I applied to a bunch of other places in a desperate attempt to get out of there. Applebee's said nothing for 3 weeks. It said on Snag-a-Job.com that they needed dishwashers. I called after I applied. "Oh, we're not actually hiring." Walgreens told me as soon as I asked for an application "No, we're not hiring." McDonald's, Shopper's, Best Buy, and various other places haven't called me back yet. The only reason I got my last two jobs is because I knew someone that got me the job. My grandmom's friend got me the first one because she was good friends with the owner and my mom is the best friend of the manager at my current job. Those were the only reasons I was offered a job there. Is there something wrong with me? Both of my employers could vouch for me that I was a good, hard worker. I did what I was told and a little more. How am I supposed to get ahead in life if I can't even get some money to start it? |

I moved a couple of years ago, and it took me about nine months to find one. Been working at Wal-Mart for almost a year now. It ain't glamorous, but it's a living. If you hang in there, chances are you'll get picked up by somebody sooner or later. The law of averages dictates it. |

Or they decide that someone who's willing to work for slave wages is better. (Slaveway/Safeway asked that I worked from 4 AM to 7-8 PM....for minimum wage, and I think it my have actually even been below minimum wage since I know there was a foreign janitor earning only $5 an hour from the GOOD manager) |

Just keep trying. I applied for 18 different jobs at one stage and didn't hear back from a single one, and ended up getting my job just by calling places advertising in the newspaper. |

I'm practically dying for work, and will apply for nearly any job, but I usually either don't get called back or get rejected. ...probably cause i'm only 13 though. |

Education does help you get higher-level jobs. I had four places competing for me at one stage after I completed my degree.

You were genuinely lucky to get into your field at a time where there was a lull in trained persons to hire. Then there's anything in the creative industries, and a slip of paper declaring an education won't mean jack unless you have actual talent in your field. That's why you always have to present proof of your work (portfolio), so they can see if you have skill, rather than a degree. |

Sure, it'll take for-freaking-ever to get a piece of paper for my work, and sure, it'll be mind-bending, but when it's over, I'll be able to get a job practically anywhere that needs someone designing computer things. Which can still be tough at times. The only good part is that there's almost always some job open for it wherever, although there is the nasty possibility of having to bounce between jobs at times. Also, the hours on programmers can be killer. |

If you are lucky, you can get hired on the spot. Spam them with your applications and call them twice weekly at least and you should be able to secure a job easily (chances are even better if you get to know the current employees and managers). Also if they have you fill out one of those personality test things, lie your ass off. The trick is that they don't want to know about you, they want you to tell them what they want to hear. You are a highly motivated extrovert that would never think of stealing and are the life and leader of any class of party. |

I know people who've been looking for a job for 5 years and have PhDs in stuff like sports medicine and genetics!

Epic Ladynerd Join Date: Jul 2000 Location: Forteresse de Valois Gender: Posts: 28,504 Thanks: 1,658 Thanked 1,820 Times in 1,042 Posts | The real story being, everyone in Australia thought they could make big bucks getting into a trade (builders, plumbers, electricians, etc) as there was a shortage of skilled workers at the time. Everyone stopped studying computer science/getting into IT (along with a general drop in overall university enrollments), which is still a massive industry, so there was a new shortage in trained professionals in the computing world. So, all in all, Kargath jumped on the boat as a really great time, and is now reaping the benefits with a slick computing job, complete with suits and everything. EH MISTER COMPUTER MAN? XD Moral of the story is: Kargath's a jerk because he's got the best job. ![]() ![]() |
