The email refers to the men as "cocksmen" whose only goal is to find 'targets' (women) from their pie (vagina) and gullet (mouth). Among the gems of the email includes this little ditty: Quote:

The full letter, in all of it's glorious misogyny and racism can be read here: Jezebel: Celebrity, Sex, Fashion for Women. Without Airbrushing. ...I feel ill. And like crying. Seriously, how is it that there are actually people like this who exist??

Apparently, the frat and University knew exactly who sent it. And the frat tried to cover it up. |

For many years I felt out of place and inferior for not being in a frat in college (and I went to one where if you weren't in a frat you were a second class citizen), but now I have a reason to be proud not to have been in a frat. I wouldn't want to be associated with any buttmunch who wrote something like this. -CSM |

It's obviously written to be humorous, misleading as it is obviously going to be(and honestly it's a good precursor to their private thoughts), which you can tell easily enough by the delivery. Just another form of self-centeredness, overall. What I'd consider disturbing is the thought that, unless someone is doing so to a visually identifiable group, their objectification and general lack of empathy aren't as recognisable. If it weren't about women and non-consensual sex, would so many decry the dehumanization that's typically present when someone classes us into vague groups? Are we all so easy to generalize as colored, nerds, employees, fags, citizens, humans, etc? We don't have a value as individuals unless you can strip our individuality out of us? |

This guy is disgusting for his comments, & his frat is disgusting as well for implicitly condoning his comments by covering for him, but they're just one frat. And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!" |

I'm not stereotyping so much as I am speaking from four long years of experience. I know there are non-douchey frat boys just as there are douchey non-frat boys. But my experiences speak for themselves. My best friends in college were in that same frat ZG mentioned above for a time, and they wouldn't give me the time of day when they were in it. But they started hanging out with me a LOT after they quit. -CSM

I think it honestly has more to do with the culture than the enrollment. Wash U is a large, urban, high-tutition, all-but-Ivy-League research institution. Truman is a tiny, rural, low-tuition, casual liberal-arts institution. The prevailing attitudes are largely different. You're right about the percentages, though; Truman's Greek enrollment is about 20%...divided into social, service, academic, & professional fratern/sororities, each of which has a different goal & a different reputation. A few of those organizations (a couple of the social frats, & maybe one academic frat) sadly would also have defended & endorsed this sort of activity from one of their members. Most (the sororities & co-ed frats, the service & professional frats, & all of the remaining social & academic frats) would not. And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!" |

National chapters cannot control individual school chapters, no, but certain behaviors and attitudes have been endorsed and actively promoted in the Greek community so that they continue to thrive. I would say, in general, that most social fraternities are more likely to endorse or engage in this behavior (recent Duke and Yale frat scandals would support this). Hell, I'd say a good portion of the social frats here at my school probably would, too. |

Particularly as an engineer who had very little time to try and do things outside class, and who was woken up at 3AM by drunken parties the night before an exam. -CSM Last edited by Crazyswordsman; 03-24-2011 at 06:16 AM. |

But there are as many people who join fraternities because they actually, get this, believe in what they stand for. I can't blame CSM for not liking many fraternities or people involved in them, a lot of people get in them and change. A lot of people get in them because they want to belong to something, not thinking about the fact that letters on your chest doens't change who you are. That said, the man....I hesitate to call him that, who wrote this letter is nothing but the lowest form of **** |

Sadly, sexism (well, most -isms, really) is more prominent in society than we realize. Yes, this letter is egregious, and many people are calling it out. But the fact is, the underlying attitudes promoting the creation of the letter are very real, and very prevalent in our society. We don't always knowingly condone these attitudes, but often, they are systemic and insidious, underlying basic social attitudes and practices. That's probably where most of my frustration and sadness is coming from. It was just especially triggered by the letter.
