I see it as an attempt to show that Nintendo is in the future while the other names are backwards, metallic, and artificial names. As a result, it sounds silly, but far more organic and original than the others. In my opinion, Wii is just the sort of DS-type weirdness we need to destroy the commercialized aspects of gaming and replace it with stuff that increases the playability of games.

'Cause if you need a metallic name to like a console, then you're judging books by their covers.

iPod makes more sense, as it follows in the same line as the iMac and other things in that series. And it isn't a homophone for male genitalia/urination.

Revolution was a better name and wasn't nearly as dumb.

Bah. I'm not crazy for the "Wii" but you know, I'm not exactly hating it either. It works. Give some time and like a bunch of others have already said, you won't even notice that Wii isn't the best name in the world. I'm sure GoDaddy or even the now defunct FuncoLand where the greatness names to be picked. But damn it, thats what the picked and thats what you have.

But hey look on the brighside! The name is pretty simple, and you can make about a million jokes out of it. "Houston, Wii have a problem...!"

The Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain and probably more Western European countries of which I don't know that much about the phonology.

Cross-linguistically 'i' is more often used to represent /i/ as in 'see' than /ai/ as in 'time'. The English vowel spelling is quite unique in the world, as they had a great vowel shift. /e/ is spelled 'e' in most of the European languages, but 'a' in English (as in A,B,C).

But of course in those countries it isn't associated with urinating.
