There are plenty of N64 games that use both Z and R (in OoT you often have to hold down both buttons at one in a battle), but I don't know any which use Z and L. |

It's not like they're on top of each other like Z and R on the GameCube controller. I do use my middle finger for the Z button in games like Mario Kart. Still, even if it's possible it would've been much more logical to put it on the left side, as that's where Z originally was. |

AI's solution is best, just extend your pointer finger. They're not that far away from each other. |
