One thing to say about the NES....

....great system, shoddy hardware.

I tried playing SMB3 up at the cottage and it took me over half an hour it get it started (I don't do the controversial blowing, I just do much fine adjustment of the position of the cart)

The blowing is controversial?

Blowing on the cart never does it any good. When trying to play the NES, always bring ear swabs and a special type of rubbing alcohol--the name of which I can't remember! Two items I never leave home without!

After playing New Super Mario Bros, I have a hankering to enjoy the entire series again.

Or you can go play SMB3 or your SNES or GBA.

I'm of half a mind to buy that Generation NEX that came out this past winter. Anyone else hear about that? When Nintendo's patent on the NES expired last year, some guys reverse-engineered the NES hardware and built a sleek new NES unit. They redesigned the connectors to prevent that glitchy flashing, and even put a slot for Famicom carts on top--to top it off, it even works with all the old gadgets, like the Advantage and the Zapper, and, if I remember, there's only one or two obscure games that aren't compatible. I should look into one of those--it'd be a hoot to play my old NES games again without worrying that the system would reset if I looked at it funny.

You should'nt be blowing in the cart or whatever. You should get a butter knife with a wet rag wrapped around the end, and scrub the gunk off the cartridge connectors. A cleaned system makes a big difference, too, although there's no easy way to do that without the kit.. Never put a dirty game into a clean system. My NES still works near-flawlessly, and it's most definitely very old.

The fact that people acknowledge that yes, there are problems with the NES proves my point.

I have my NES, SNES, and N64 up at the cottage. Of those three, I've only had persistent problems with the NES.

If Nintendo thought dust was such a problem, why did they make a system the way it was instead of the traditional top-loading technique (which they eventually did with the re-released NES towards the end of the run)

Change the connector. You'll thank yourself for it.

It a nutshell, you are doing more harm than good, since the moisture in your breath will erode the connectors.

^^Well, Jesus. And here every gaming rag I read was trumpeting the Generation NEX as the best thing since sliced bread. Yet more evidence for my general theory about gaming journos, in general, being bought-out scum.

Honestly, I've seen the compatibility list plenty of times, I just think he's being picky. I'm still interested in ordering one. It's still better than an emulator, IMO, and my NES won't last forever.

Better solution: go to some non-chain gaming store and get this:

http://hawanja.com/neofami.htm

Make sure to get the second edition. Aside from some weird sound issue that reverses sine/sawtooth(basically meaning everything will sound a bit off), it's pretty nice. And it's only $20.

That's the damn truth. You can find the connectors for about 10 bucks on the 'net, and its fairly simple to install.

I mucked with my NES a little and she is better but still a little temperamental. I followed the instructions from here: http://www.classicgaming.com/feature...les/nesrepair/

My NES hasn't worked in years. Mabye all the blowing we did actually hurt the system. I have to take it to some used game store one of these days.

I have a secret old technique that works every time:

Game Genie

Your cart plugs into it, and it into the NES. The game sticks out of the system, but it's held at just the right angle for it to start on the first power up .

Darn, I thought the Generation Nex would be cool with its wireless controllers
