Red face Wii is best selling system in US history...

Nintendo record the most successful across-the-board holiday performance in U.S. video game history! Details inside...

Quote:
Independent U.S. sales figures released by the NPD Group today confirmed an impressive launch for the Wii and the undisputed crowning of DS as the best-selling video game device of any type for both the holiday period and indeed the whole of 2006.

The sale of more than 1.5 million extra Wii-motes accompanied the purchase of every Wii console available at retail - which totalled more than a million in just the 44 days between American launch and year end. On average, Wii owners purchased three extra games - with 86% of Wii owners choosing Zelda: Twilight Princess, which (along with the Nintendo GameCube version) has sold 1.5 million units in seven weeks - making it into the top five best selling titles of the year.

Meanwhile the DS sold through a staggering 1.6 million systems in December alone, with a total year figure of 5.3 million unit sold. New Super Mario Bros. and Brain Age both were in the top ten most sold games of the year.

Throughout the November/December holiday shopping period, Nintendo accounted for more than half of all video game hardware systems sold in America, and have increased its projected worldwide financial performance for the financial year ending on March 31 to be the best in company history.

“Millions of players, both hard-core and brand-new, are already enjoying the unique entertainment provided by Wii, but demand for the system remains incredibly high," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “So our work is just beginning. We're dedicating ourselves to maximizing both manufacturing and distribution full bore throughout 2007, to make sure everyone who wants to experience the future of video gaming can do so just as soon as possible."

Wouldn't that be fasted selling? Since pretty much every major console besides the PS3 has sold more so far.

I don't see what you're getting at, Koga. The 360's been out for over a year and the PS3 hasn't given many shipments.

Best selling implies that the most units of that console were sold worldwide over all time. Obviously that's not the case with the Wii as even all previous Nintendo home consoles beat it out, as do the Xbox 360 and Xbox, PSX and PS2 (I assume, I didn't bother to check the figures). I think a record as described in the article would be referred to as the fastest selling system, not the best selling system.

My point is, that even though it's a big succes for the Wii, I doubt it will be more succesful than the NES, which sold over 60 million untis, and gave Nintendo a market share of over 85% at one time.

Yeah, I'm still trying to get one. Meanwhile, I had several chances to obtain the PS3 and willfully refused.

Weird that Nintendo is doing so well. Most companies seem to do great once and die. *coughcoughSEGAcoughSONYcoughATARI* Something about disbelief that they can die down or something, and a lack of adjustments until they're out of first place.

Odd thing was, I nearly got a PS3--until the price tag hit. ...Until Sonic 06 hit the ground like a dud on Xbox 360 and didn't come out for it. ...Until I realized I could get a PS2 for a fraction of the price AND a Wii. ...Until I realized I'd be on the losing side of the console war if things kept up like they were (and are, at least for now)

I don't want PS3 to die, but it seems to be doing badly, like my beloved Sega Saturn. Heck, I used to like Sega. Now they're crud. Why do quality companies have to decay like this? Why can't they just explode?

Of course I have, and I knew someone would point that out. I don't think it really counts as a home console, though, as it's not something you have to hook onto a TV.
