While videogame soundtracks have been popular among the hardcore gaming community for more than a decade, a new study suggests that videogame music maybe finding a larger audience. Specifically, according to a survey of 1,000 gameplayers conducted by ElectricArtists, 40 percent of respondents said that after hearing a song they like in a video game have they then bought the CD. The survey revealed that new artists including OK GO, Andrew W.K., Good Charlotte, Nappy Roots, Del the Funky Homosapien, and Trust Company have gained invaluable awareness and popularity from being featured in video games.

Among the other important findings, a noteworthy 74 percent agreed that soundtracks help sell video games; 43 percent of respondents said they downloaded a video game soundtrack from a file sharing network such as Napster or KaZaA; 40 percent of those responding learned of a new song or band from a game and then 27 percent of them went out and bought their CD; and more than nine out of ten -- a whopping 92 percent -- of respondents remember the music well after they stopped playing the game.

"More and more, the major record labels are looking towards video games to help ‘break’ new artists that might not have enough radio airplay or exposure on MTV to generate respectable sales," said Marc Schiller, CEO of ElectricArtists. "While the primary reason to buy the product remains fun and games, the music that adds pace and rhythm to them is having an impact on CD awareness and sales as well. The number of conversions from listener/players to music buyers is significant."

Its not a genre, but I know what you mean.

I'm not altogether sure about those figures. And also the article is kinda misleading, its not the videogame (background) music thats becoming more popular, but the fact that artist that have songs featured in a game (such as EA's sporty games) get recognition.

Just thought I'd point that out.

I've seen a couple, but I can't remember where.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

I have also downloaded MP3s (from CBFD, JFG, SSBM, Zelda:TWW and B-T) and a lot of Nes Sound Files (inlcuding Mega Man 1-6, SMB 1-3 and the Zeldas).

1.68 gigabytes of mp3s on my hard drive. 1.67 of that is real music. The other .01 is video game music, most of which I never even listen to. The only ones I really care for are those kickass Overclocked remixes... especially Terra In Black. Good stuff.

I had a friend buy me a OoT CD once, but that pluss the SSBM soundtrack are the only game CD's I have. I burned a few, but those don't really count as soundtracks...

Soundtracks, I don't like (although it was neat that Tony Hawk featured Chixdiggit!'s "Gettin' Air"). Scores (i.e. instrumentals), however, in relation to video games, I do like.

I never understood what was so special about VG music. Frankly, I find it boring.

^WWWHHHAAATTT???!!!

Dude, video game music is among the best in the world. Always beautiful, pertinant, memorable, and nostalgic. And music is an integral part of a video game. Wouldn't it be weird to play a game with no soundtrack? How can you say that game music is boring?

Video game music is an essential part for any game. In fact, besides fun factor, music is the most important part of a game to me. However, for straight-up listening, most video game music sucks. The only game music that I've actually liked to listen outside of the game are those from Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger... basically, anything from Square. Oh, and Fire Emblem from Melee. Aside from that, it just doesn't cut it for me.

Now gimme my Jimmy Eat World.
