According to a recent Reuters report, Taito is planning to sell Space Invaders cabinets in North America again, some 25 years after the game first appeared in arcades. The manufacturing and sales of Space Invaders will be handled by Namco, and Taito hopes to sell around 10,000 of the US$2,772 machines.

"There has been a rebirth of classic video games in America," said Taito spokesman Kengo Naka. "We thought it would coincide nicely with the 25th anniversary of its debut in the U.S."

The game will not be different from the 1978 original in any way, although Taito has stated that a single play on the game will cost 50 cents as opposed to the 25 cents charged when the game was first launched.

They should keep it 25 cents. They'd still make a pretty good profit, I think.

When was the last time you ever heard of an arcade machine accepting anything besides quarters and/or arcade tokens?

They're probably using inflation as an excuse to double the playing price.

50 cents? LOL. I could probably download 50 different versions off the internet, so I'm not running God-knows-how-many-miles to the nearest arcade and paying 50 cents. Yeah, I'm cheap.

Well, Namco also released a "20-year Reunion" machine with Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga a few years ago, and that was 50 cents too. And also popular.

Should be part of a giant, Nintendo-owned Arcade chain.

If Nintendo doesn't own Space Invaders, what is its relevancy to this forum?

^...*thinks* you have a very good point...

THOUGH, there is no arcade forum and stuff. It's placement would be hard to decide. So I guess it's alright here.

Space Invaders is a legendary classic that applies to the discussion of video games in general. It's 25th birthday should be recognized. Also, home versions of Space Invaders have appeared on Nintendo systems.
