Excellent observation Anti-Social. And since all of the Koopa Kids don't have horns, you could assume that the horns grow as they get older...

Or it could be that Miyamoto just draws stuff, and says: "Hey, I like this character design! I'm going to use it in my next game!"

But I suppose we all want our continuity.

Of course not, because I wrote the entire SMBA guide.

Beetles and Lakitus seem rather closely related, as well as the Chargin' Chucks, Fire Bros., Boomerang Bros., Nokobons, and a few other particular koopas. The relation is, of course, the smooth shell. One might say their base specie is beetles.

Regular koopas, on the other hand, have a more textured (for lack of better word) sort of shell, with a pattern of sorts in it. This is true among koopa troopas, paratroopas, hammer brothers, and even Dry Bones. One might say their base specie is shellcreepers.

(Side note: It's impossible to tell where magikoopas fall, since we cannot see their shell.)

Royal Koopas, as Ditto suggested, are what Bowser and his children fall under. Boom Booms would also fall under this (contrary to what Ditto said. They do have spikes). Tubba Blubba also fits in this well for that matter. Their distinguishing features are their hair, spiky shells, and usually distinguished tails for the older ones. Bowser is the only one to have horns (he didn't as a baby though, and neither does Bowser Jr.). One might say their base specie is spinies.

(Side note: Other koopas have hair. Such cases would include Kolorado's mustache, Lakilester's hair, Kammy's hair. Earlier lakitus though are depicted with having three tiny hairs on their head.)

A note on the Koopa Kids and such...

The seven Koopalings and Bower Jr. are all children of Bowser. Futher relations are unknown.

Baby Bowser's appearances are just as messy as the Baby Mario and Luigi's appearances (and DK Jr. in Mario Tennis). They are best ignored.

Koopa Kid is another matter though. He apparently isn't a Baby Bowser, due to his coloring. And he is a playable character, which might suggest old Bowser might have nine kids now. (Of course, it could be a bad translation. Bowser is known as Koopa in Japan. So 'Baby Bowser' could easily become 'Koopa Kid').

I think I should have titled this topic "The Koopa Species", because they are probably more of a species than a race. A quite diverse species might I add. I wasn't thinking was I? I guess race just came to mind first.

With the idea of diversity in mind, I still don't know how some of these so-called Koopas can be classified as Koopas. For example, I would have never thought Chargin' Chuck was a Koopa. The Koopas seem to be very very different, with my subspecies. I thought all the REAL Koopas all looked like Bowser, since he is King of the Koopas.

EDIT: Also, can someone give me a link to this "SMBA guide"

ANOTHER EDIT: I also changed the name of the topic to "The Koopa Species" as it is more accurate

The SMBA Guide is a guide to a fanfic, so it won't do you very juch good. Besides, the only stuff in it of interest to you I and Ditto already stated.

Tub'O'Troopas are cases of giants, similar to what we see with Kent C. Koopa in Paper Mario. Give him wings and he would have been a Tub'O'Troopa.

I really don't tknow what else you could classify the charging chucks and clubbas and such. They have koopa like shells and are obviously not bugs. Look at a picture of a Chargin' Chuck. He's a turtle all right and it's reasonable to assume that he is also a koopa.

Next to the koopas, the shyguy 'species' would probably have to be the most diverse. And that's not just including motif style shyguys either.

Hey. Here's a simpler version for the anit-Marios.

KOOPA TROOPA: stupid. walks on four legs.
KOOPA: evolved from Koopa. Smart. Two legged.
KOOPA-PARATROOPA: Even more evolved. The phase right up under Lakitus.
ROYAL KOOPAS: Bowser's family type. Includes Kent C. Koopa, Tubba Blubba, Clubbas, etc.
LAKITUS: magical Koopas that ride clouds. They slowly departed Bowser's army, and did more normal things.
MAGIKOOPA: magical koopas under the conrtol of Kammie Koopa and Merlin Koopa.

I don't feel like listing any other types.

I had assumed that some koopas evolved from yoshis or vice-versa, and clubbas were kind an evolution point between koopa and yoshi. It has some yoshi features like the dinosaur like appearance and soft skin with saddle-like back, yet still looked like a koopa due to face, hair, and spiked back.

Rocky Wrench is another interesting specimen of Koopa. I imagine a lot of people would pass him aside since he looks like a mole, but the SMB3 booklet says...
Quote:
Rocky is a TURTLE who kind of looks like a mole.
He would fall into the Beetle category of smooth-shells.

I should also point out that Boomerang Bros. and Fire Bros. have the jagged shells akin to the Shellcreeper category, not smooth shells.

Rocky Wrench is pretty out there. Dude has a FACE like a mole.

Wow, I'm impressed, guys. You're GOOD.

P.S. Masa, I didn't say Boom Booms don't have spikes. I said they don't have horns.

Clubbas and Tubba Blubbas are pretty far out there too, IMO...

Ah, I was recalling from memory regarding Boomerang and Fire Brothers, didn't look at the sprites.
