| Guest | Can someone give me a really good, detailed explanation of the entire Koopa Race? What I don't get is that Koopa Troopas have beaks, and Bowser, King of the Koopas, does not. And what exactly are Goombas? What about Bowser's 7 Koopa Kids as well as Baby Bowser and Bowser Jr.? Can anyone explain all of this, and anyting else Koopa-like, as accurately as possible? | Guest | Goombas are mushrooms. They are traitors to the Mushroom Kingdom. Koopa Troopas don't really have beaks; that's just an exaggeration of the beak-like mouths that real turtles have. Bowser doesn't have it because he's big enough for a properly rendered mouth. The Koopalings are Bowser's 7 kids. They appeared in SMB3 and SMW, and have recently resurfaced in M&L. Bowser Jr. is what we like to call a continuity error. I don't remember Baby Bowser. But I do remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!" |

Here's the skinny on the whole Koopa race. Shellcreepers/ "Koopa Troopas" - These are the over-sized (as big as a Galapagos) turtles, which walk on four legs. These are the bottom rung of Koopa evolution, the equivalent of our apes, if you're of that mind. They're massive, have intelligences slightly lower than dogs, and are actually pretty vicious. Interestingly, the Koopas use them as attackers. They march around on patrol and attack. Compared to average turtles, they get around at a pretty good clip. They appear to have very poor vision. Probably originally sea turtles, and hence do poorly on land. Koopas - These are the upright turtle folk we've seen more recently. These are the main body of the Koopa people. They're not all bad; it appears the dumber ones are the ones most likely to go along with Bowser. They're pretty intelligent. They at least wear shoes, and little T-shirts under their shells. It's from these that more sophisticated members of Bowser's army are culled; soldiers from here are part of the 'Hammer Brotherhood' who use hammers as weapons. We also get MagiKoopas from these ranks. Royal Koopas/ "Boom Booms" - These are the biggest, strongest members of the Koopa race, who rule over the lesser Koopas, for the most part. These are the gigantic ones with the thickest skin, greatest physical strength, and spiked shells. They can even breathe fire, with a little training. This is where Bowser and his family are from. They appear to be the alpha males of this bunch. They're not the only ones, though. The Boom-Booms from SMB3 are from this same group, and we can clearly see why the Bowser line are the ones in charge. Why the Boom Booms don't appear to have horns or hair is a fair question: They may have been young, or perhaps they're required to saw off their horns and cut their hair since they're not royalty. Perhaps it's part of the military style. Not sure. Clubbas and Tubba Blubba are also from this grouping. They have hair, but no horns. They must have to saw them off. Lakitus- Branching off the side from the middle-level Koopas is this strange offshoot. They have magical powers that they typically use to control clouds and seem to live separately from the rest of the Koopa bunch, in loftier, more exotic locales. It seems only a few of these lofty turtles follow Bowser. They look the most like regular Koopas, but for the weird swirly design on their shells, tinier bodies, no beaks, and some hair. Spinies - An offshoot of the Shellcreepers. Though much smaller, they're far more heavily armored, with tucked-in heads and plenty of spikes. It's possible the Boom-Booms evolved from these, while the rank-and-file Koopas came from the Shellcreeper line. Beetles- Shooting off from the other side of the Shellcreeper are these. These are the most heavily armored Koopas. They're called Beetles, but aren't insects. They live in caves and rocky places, and can climb rocks. They're absolutely fireproof, and very heavy. Wild fighters, and pretty vicious. Any kind of Koopa I've missed? |
