Well it's official, Microsoft bought Rare, and all Rares stock from Nintendo. Donkey Kong and Starfox will probably stay as Nintendos licensed characters and will stay on Gamecube, but I'm not sure about Banjo Kazooie and Perfect Dark. I believe those two are X-box bound...

I hate Microsoft!!! I won't buy an Xbox even though I love Rare's games. I just hope they won't become Xbox exclusive.

Star Fox and DK are Nintendo's, there's no 'probably' about them staying with Nintendo...

Rare won't announce anything until all the details are finalized, including who gets what properties (the holdup right now). Honestly we aren't sure about Kameo ourselves either; it's pretty far along, but I doubt MS wants it on the GameCube. That's why we speculated of a 'Cube release with an Xbox port.

And that's pretty much confirmed now.

Without DK, that game is gone for Rare. What else can they attract buyers with? PD and maybe a sequel to Conker's BFD. Too bad to see them go. Oh well.

Later...

I just thought it would be easier to copy my post from the Nintendo land forums, though realize a bit of it is in context with some of the posts earlier in the thread.

Ditto.
God..I had complete faith in Rare to make the right choice...
Does this mean all their GBA games are being called off?
Like diddy kong pilot, saberwulf, and the new banjo kazooie?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rare actually didn't make the choice, Nintendo did. They sold their Rare shares. As seen in MM's post, Rare actually hasn't been doing that much lately. We can only have a true assesment of what Nintendo has lost when we play SFA. I think it will be intersesting to see what Rare does with the X-box. They always try to push the counsoles they work on to the limit, and the X-box can most definatly be pushed the farthest of the next gen consoles. This has swayed me even more to get an X-box, there are some interesting games for it now and in the future, and this adds something. Needless to say, Nintedo still has some good devs working exclusivly for them. Silicon Knights and Retro anyone? Also, Nintendo's bisness transactions after this is annouced offically by all companies involved will be interesting. Expect a lot, because I doubt they are going to drop Rare, and then do nothing to fill the gap that will be left. I guess all the rumors were right, glad that they will stop. And to everyone who is mad about this, just clear your mind think a bit, and realize it really isn't all that bad. Remember, puting an X-box by a Gamecube won't make your house explode, and adding a PS2 to the mix isn't a sign of the apocolypse.

Man, why do I feel more and more pressure to get an X-Box? First some of awesome Sega games are XBox-exclusive, and now this... IT'S NOT RIGHT!!!

Thats hilarious. Rare are dead, simple as that. Lesse... Conker, DK, Banjo and Fox McCloud all belong to Nintendo, what can they do? Perfect Dark Zero and maybe a Blast Corps sequel to what they have now, otherwise all their games will have to be new inventions.

Rare has still yet to finalize since they are still haggling over franchise rights. Anything created on N64 has a good chance of going over to the X Box.

Jet Force Gemini was a great game, it didn't get much publicity though, Microsoft has a good oppertunity to captitalize there if they advertise it right.

Well since Nintendo isn't talking yet, all they are willing to give is an "Untill further notice" statement. Here is what they are saying so far:

Quote:
Although Nintendo doesn't comment on rumors or speculation by the media, we can tell you that Nintendo has made the decision not to request Rare to make any further exclusive games for the Nintendo GameCube. Although we're proud of our joint efforts with Rare over the years and have enjoyed our relationship with them, in fiscal year 2001, Rare accounted for only 9.5% of total Nintendo software revenue worldwide. In fiscal year 2002, that number declined to 1.5%. Therefore, in evaluating our investments in developers, as well as the financial benefits to Nintendo over the years, we've decided it's in Nintendo's best interests to focus on diversifying our portfolio of developers and projects.

Star Fox Adventures, which was jointly developed by Rare and Nintendo, will launch as scheduled on September 23rd and will remain exclusive to the Nintendo GameCube. Nintendo's other great franchise characters such as Donkey Kong also will remain exclusive to Nintendo.

We have no additional details to share on this issue at this time. Be sure to check out our official website (www.nintendo.com) for the latest information as it becomes available.
