This doesn't really bother me. Nintendo didn't bank the success of the GC on the premise that it would have online playing capabilities. Remember the X-Band? If I remember correctly, it only lasted about 1 year, and then the company that provided it and the service folded. Both the N64 and the GC have 4 controller ports. This was made espcially in mind for multi-player games. One of the reasons that Sony is so forcefully advertising it's online versions of popular games, is because they know Nintendo is kicking their butt when it comes to multi-player games. The only way they can counter this is to use the online play. As for X-Box, they banked their system almost right from the start about it being able to support online play. Heck, you could almost say that X-Box is now depending almost entirely upon the success of it's online games. If you think this isn't true, then answer me this: Why can you now buy an X-Box for the equivalent of $100? Online gaming will probably become either a short-term, or mid-term fad. Mos t systems, evern the newest generation consoles, have some problems when it comes to supporting online play, mainly the fact that they are somewhat underpowered to do the job. My guess is that online play will probably remain the most popular where it's been almost since it's inception: PC's. |
