Nintendo NCL has announced Japanese Nintendo DS preorders of over two million—double the company’s target of one million units. In response to the impressive demand, Nintendo is scrambling to produce more units.

Since Nintendo does not have the capacity to produce more than one million Nintendo DS systems, it is currently preparing a third production site in China so that it may ship more to Japanese retailers by the end of the year.

Investors responded favorably to the news: Nintendo’s stock rose 3.97 percent today. Nintendo aims to ship 4 million DS units worldwide by the end of March.

I think it is very safe to say that the DS is officially a "not-failure."

Not yet. If everyone pre-orders and sales drop off dramatically after the launch window, it'll be a failure. I don't see that happening though.

^ I only see that happening if the entire population of Japan is two million.

The DS is coming out in America before Japan, isn't it? I'd like to know how many American pre-orders there are.

Still, this is very good news for Nintendo.

A few million I believe, I will find out exactly, though.

There's also the chance of what happened with the Virtual Boy - everyone and their next door neighbor buys one, then half of them return it the next day.

Although I kind of doubt that's going to happen.

Where are these lemmings going? The Super Nintendo Super Shire! Hop in line and follow them there!

Wow. @_@

A question about the DS and preordering here... does it come with anything extra with a preorder? *is tempted to do so... almost*

I'm pretty sure that's implied with the title "DS Preorder."

Anyone else find it rather odd that games are being shipped almost a week before the DS itself? I'll have Mario DS before I even have something to play it with.

Woah, that's a lot of preorders. You guys don't need to rush out for North America though, it's nothing like that. Does anyone have North American preorder numbers?

Well, EB changed the shipping for Mario DS to the same date as the DS itself. Fortunately I was able to change the shipping method so I get both at the same time.

I didn't preorder it, because I didn't get really excited until a month before its release, and decided not to bother. I also didn't run across any oppurtunities to do so without putting forth any effort.

While I don't want them to be sold out Sunday, it'd be cool if it did because it would mean Nintendo's kicking arse again!

Think about how many people DID preorder them, and then consider how fast the extremely limited supply they keep for non-layby customers sells out. Better get there as soon as the store opens.

Unless the store you plan on visiting doesn't take preorders, or isn't crawling with people half the time. I know if I didn't preorder and went to EB I'd stand no chance in hell.

If you didn't preorder do not go to EB.

Like me; I have to hit Circuit City early.
