Take the first fight with Bowser for example: Bowser: Gwahahahahaha! You'll never be able to run to my back, press A, grab my tail, swing me round using the touch screen and press A whenever you want to throw me into one of those big bombs!! Gwahahahaha! |

Then the developers decide to program the manual (and lately the strategy guide, too) into the game instead of doing the traditional "Hey, if they want to figure it out for themselves and only glimpse at the manual if they have absolutely no idea what the Ring of Stars is for, more power to 'em. Or let's stick in a guy they can ask if they need to know how to order stuff." way of teaching the player how to play the game. Another irritation about in-game tutorials is you have to sit through them whenever you replay the game. There was a house at the beginning of Final Fantasy 3/6 you could go into and ask around if you needed to know how the game worked. But if you already knew how to play, you could just skip the house entirely. If Final Fantasy 3/6 were made today, the man in the house would stop you as you tried to leave town and take you into the house and make you talk to everybody, then do several practice sessions and a quiz or two before finally being able to get on with it. Okay, yes, some things need instructions. Usually minigames (such as the mine cart game in Mario & Luigi). But a lot of stuff games spill lately is garbage. ![]() Where are these lemmings going? It's a habit I got from when I was young, when getting a new game was a new and exciting thing that happened rarely. I would look at all the pretty pictures in the manual because they looked better than the fuzzy sprites on-screen, and read the intro story at the front of the manual because the story sometimes wasn't told in full in-game. Now, I have a huge collection of manuals that I keep for no apparent reason. Digression aside, I never read the manual to find out how to play the game. That kind of stuff you can usually figure out on your own in the first ten seconds of gameplay. If not, there are always the in-game tutorials that lead you through the game by the hand. |

About manuals, I read the story, maybe character bios, look at artwork, read a few notes here and there, then toss it aside and try to figure the game out for myself. Sometimes I pick the manual if I need to know what something does (I've gone through most of the Alundra manual tyring to figure out what the Gilded Falcons do, although the manual doesn't seem to contain anything on them). I have never sat down and read a manual from front to back. ![]() Where are these lemmings going? The Super Nintendo Super Shire! Hop in line and follow them there! With a game that's on the complex side, like a PC strategy game, I'll look at the basics before I start playing. Otherwise, I'll play the game first but usually still read the instructions the same day. They can be interesting at times, and once in a while you pick up on something useful that you didn't already figure out on your own. |

If you don't have anything to say, don't post. I've got a good example of how useful it can be to read a manual. A couple of week's ago, I was at a friend's and he had borrowed his brother's GameCube with Double Dash. I played it for a bit, showing off, and I took all the turns with blue flames. Everyone in the room asked me how I did it, so I explained it to them. They were all like, how the hell did you find that out? ...it's in the manual. |
