I consider myself the luckiest of men when I find some doofus at a Gamestop willing to sell the night before streetdate. How'd you swing it? Oh, and how's the game? But I doubt BioShock will be a heavy contender. A 12 hour campaign with no multiplayer and absolutely no replay value isn't gonna beat Mass Effect, Halo, CoD4, Assassin's Creed, etc. Anyway, with the character customizer, are you forced to be human, or can you be something else, like a Turian? |

CoD4 gives like a 6 hour campaign and attempts to be a tactical shooter with no cover system (which makes it feel dated), while Assassin's Creed is getting mixed reviews. I'm not seeing either of those two in any serious running for overall GOTY. Last edited by Lurch1982; 11-16-2007 at 11:35 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

The four frontrunners for GOTY as of right now are probably Mass Effect, Bioshock, Orange Box, and Mario Galaxy. The first two for narrative, the third probably not couting because it is actually five games, and the fourth for being what is essentially the perfect platformer. God of War 2 woulda been up there too because it's fantastic but everybody seems to have forgotten about it. Last edited by Wyborn; 11-17-2007 at 05:50 PM. |

Orange Box, or Portal? I'm not against Portal, I thought you meant the Orange Box. Maybe my bad. And for BioShock, the absence of multiplayer for a Next Gen game is not a good sign, and the utter lack of replay value is shocking. Granted, the first time you play it, it's an amazing and beautiful game, but only the first time. It just loses it's luster. My Hopes for GOTY are Mass Effect, Halo 3, COD4, Galaxy, and maybe one I forgot. I'll be happy if any of these win: I'm not solely rooting for Halo. |

Still doesn't get past the fact that Bioshock is leaps and bounds better than Halo 3 and CoD4's campaigns. It slams them both in narrative and in flow and action. Whereas I felt like Halo 3 had parts that just dragged on, Bioshock never had that. CoD4 was over before anyone realized it started, and the game as a whole feels antiquated compared to contemporary shooters, especially those that use cover systems. Portal is in the Orange Box.

And yes, right now, I like the campaign of COD4 more than BioShock. I'm on my second runthrough. And no, I don't put CoD4 over BioShock because of multiplayer. I put it ahead because you can play it more than once and enjoy it. |

I'm trying to reconcile this: Quote:
CoD4 is the weakest of the "top shooter" lot (including Metroid Prime 3) because the campaign was weak and could be burned through in 5 hours. Also, no online co-op or splitscreens is just stupid. People throw out phrases like "generic shooter' against almost anything in the genre, and this game is one of the many reasons for it. Fundamentally, it doesn't do anything new, and it feels antiquated compared to everything else out. Halo (and Bioshock) doesn't have a cover system, but Halo also doesn't try to disguise itself as a tactical shooter (ala Clancy series). Missing the cover system is just inexcusable if you're trying to pack this up as a tactical shooter. If they put one in, the game is extremely solid and might have weight (though you're still looking at a very weak, very short campaign). The multiplayer is a good addition, though a bit noob unfriendly if you get started late. Really, if given the choice between a run-and-gun shooter, I'm taking Halo 3 because its a more fundamentally sound game. Even all that said, Bioshock did more with the narrative than Halo 1-3 and CoD 1-4 combined. I don't mind the lack of multiplayer because I don't see how they could do anything worthwhile in the multiplayer without it being completely out of balanced and feel like just a generic tacked on mode. If Bioshock stuck with the original plan and went 3rd person through the entire game, there wouldn't be a question on it's validity even with lack of multiplayer.
