I thought it might be fun to look back on the series we all love so much and see how it started. Feel free to comment on your own memories and thoughts. If this catches on then maybe we could work our way up all the way to the most current games. ![]() The Legend of Zelda was truely the start of it all. For the first time players could explore the vast secrets of Hyrule. The game was an instant hit. It challenged all who played solve countless puzzles like the mystery of the Lost Wood, or the hungry moblin, in the search for dungeons and treasure. One of the biggest features of it's time was that it was actually the very first game to ever have a battery backed-up memory, allowing you to save and quit. ![]() The game had an original cast of monsters, each with their own strengths and weaknesses for the player to discover and overcome. Almost all of which have since returned in various incarnations throughout the series. (bonus points if you can name the one monster that's been in every game.) ![]() Finally, just when you thought you'd won, the game revealed a second, much harder quest with new obstacles to overcome. My own memories of this game are quite pleasent. I remember the shiny golden cart that I was never allowed to play at my friend's house. I remember renting it with my brother and getting totally stuck in the first dungeon. That still didn't stop us from sneaking into the second and getting the boomerang, tracking down the power bracelet, or saving up for the blue ring though! Later, I remember getting the rereleased version of the game for my birthday. I remember examining the manuel and maps that came with the game, marking down secrets and drawing our own maps to make it through the tough spots. Calling friends that had already beaten it for tips when we got really stuck. Getting lost for days in the final dungeon before I finally found the silver arrows and went on to defeat Ganon. As far as games go, it was a true masterpiece for it's time. Last edited by Cravdraa; 03-16-2006 at 01:56 AM. |

My brother's best friend did, and he didn't have SMB3 which we owned, so we would swap those very often. I have very fond memories of the game (especially the tune), but I remember we never got further than a certain point (I think it was 6 Triforce pieces). Then in the 5th grade of elementary school a new guy came in our class who was an even bigger Nintendo nut than me. He also owned Zelda and new all the secrets (such as how to open the 7th dungeon), with his help I got to Ganon, but I never beat him. At the end of the year he moved again, and I had never played the game again until the Collector's Edition (although I played it a few times on a ROM). This was also the first time that I beat the game (with a little help from the internet). I didn't care for the second quest at all. Once I found out you could walk through certain walls I knew I didn't have the patience to complete the game without help. I did beat it, but I used a lot of walkthroughs and maps from GameFAQs. Now, when I play it again, I only play through the first quest. |

I played a lot of 'LoZ'--it's probably the NES game I played the most of (no mean feat, considering how addicted to Mario and 'River City Ransom' I was). I used to dream about those dual-sword-wielding centaurs--sometimes as sprites, sometimes in full-on technicolor nightmare mode. I always attacked Ubiquitous Old Man. I once spent an hour trying to reconstruct the opening theme song on the family piano, but gave up when thinking about the music inspired to go play the game instead. My older cousin showed me the manky old 'Lord of the Rings' cartoon when I was eight or so; when I referred to the orcs as Moblins, he spit-taked Mr. Pibb all over the living room. In fourth grade, the weird kid in my class flipped out when I said the main character was named Link (he thought it was Zelda), and he stabbed me in the hand with a compass. I enjoyed the Zelda cereal on several occasions, but the Zelda cartoon gave me severe indigestion. Aside from that, my remembrances are pretty much the same as yours. Sorry to be so boring. __________________ Boo--beware, he lives | |

I recommend a playthrough of BS-Zelda for those looking to remember with a fresh taste: http://bszelda.zeldalegends.net Don't be shy, there's no way Nintendo could ever release the game in its original format to the public, and the game has been modified to be played as a single experience. DEATH TO THOSE WHO KNOW NOT OF THE GORIYAS. |

| O_O You forgot the WAND!!! GAH!!! The wand... it's important to remember these things... I had a thing about the wand and whopping the critters with it. I never finished this game... something happened at that time and now my game cartridge is MIA. ![]() | |

One, the dungeon music. Two, no matter how many times I cleared a square of monsters, it made no permanent impact on the population. This I found incredibly frustrating. Course, now I have the Collecter's Edition disk and I play it all the time. |

After all this time it's still one of the best of the series. Second Quest hits you pretty early on putting Darknuts in as early as the 2nd dungeon. __________________ I am terror, I am Daos. |

I honestly can't really stand it... I guess young'ns like me are just too spoiled with our Xbox 360's and NVIDIA graphics mumbo-jumbo and all that. Though I really liked Zelda II, oddly enough. |
