It's funny. It's funny because it's bigger than an ordinary-sized hat.

I used my magic powers to turn a gerund into an adverb. If that doesn't impress you, I can only assume you've lost that spark of childlike wonder that makes life worth living. Also, you're probably the devil.

First-false.
Second-true.

Also, you used...or tried to use giggling as a verb. A gerund is a verb form ending in -ing that is used as a noun. I used giggling as a gerund in my post.
You wanna borrow my thesaurus?

You'll find if you reread his post that Booya used the word "gigglingly", which is precisely what Booya said he was trying to do--make an adverb. I believe adverbs are words commonly ending with "-ly" that can be used to modify adverbs, adjectives, and verbs.

Would you like to borrow my dictionary?

You misunderstood me. He said that he changed a gerund into an adverb. You are correct in your definition of an adverb, but if he had removed the ly from the word giggling and kept everything in the sentence exactly as it was, it (giggling) would have been a verb, not a gerund. Therefore, his post should have read as follows:

WRONG

Let us return to the post in question, shall we?

You are correct, the word "giggling" when looked at out of context is a verb form. However, look at the context without the "-ly": "your giggling". Your, in this case, is a possessive pronoun, which by the standard rules of English grammar, must then be proceeded by the object that is owned by the pronoun. However, you cannot own verbs because they are not objects; it's like trying to own an interjection. Rather, you must own nouns because those are the only parts of speech that represent objects (people, places, and things) (and possibly pronouns as well, but that's a side discussion). Thus, "giggling" in this case functions as a noun. And since it happens to be the "-ing" form of a verb that functions as a noun, it is a gerund.

My post originally said 'participle'. Some gypsy must have snuck in and changed it while I was away--they are a cunning folk, and not to be trusted.

Let's analyze the sentence in question.

I'll be over here gigglingly quietly to myself.

The first step in analyzing a sentence is to find the verb, then the subject. The subject is underlined once, the verb twice. "I'll" is a contraction for "I will", so we can expand it without changing the structure of the sentence. Since there is no way to underline twice in this interface, I will italicize the verb. Now the sentence looks like this:

I will be over here giggling[ly] quietly to myself.

The rest are all modifiers.

...over here....

"Here" is an adverb modifying "giggling[ly]". Giggling where? Giggling here. "Over" is another adverb, this time modifying "here".

...quietly to myself.

"Quietly" is an adverb modifying "giggling[ly]". Giggling how? Giggling quietly. "To myself" is a prepositional phrase used as-*gasp!*-an adverb, also modifying "giggling[ly]". Giggling how? Giggling to myself.

As you see, "giggling[ly]" was indeed used as a verb, not a gerund.

This is of course incorrect, which is probably why that sly little gypsy changed it for you. A participle is a verb form used as an adjective, which giggling[ly] is obviously not in this context.

So you are right, TML, as always. Someone is wrong. But I'm afraid I'm not the one that didn't pay attention in English class.

^We got out of that whole 'Zelda' thing years ago. Nowadays it's the 'Anal-Retentive Condescending Grammar/Spelling/Usage Fascism' forum (motto: 'There's Nothing We Won't Nitpick'). It's where people go to harp on like old women until they have crushed all joy and light in the world. Not surprisingly, it's a big draw.
