Question about posting fan fiction

Hi everyone,

Sorry for a somewhat pointless thread, but I coludn't find an answer to this anywhere. This seemed like the most relevant place for me to ask my question. Besides, it looks like some of you are fairly dedicated to fanfics.

Ok, so here goes. You see, I've got a nearly completed fanfic based on Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It'll be done probably next month. I wandered around here for a bit, and I decided I'd lke to get some feedback from you guys.

The thing is the fanfic is quite long. I'd say at least 120 pages on Microsoft Word with 12 point font. And there are twelve chapters plus a prologue and an epilogue. Now I know this means a lot of people won't bother committing so much time, but I figure I might as well take a shot. But I'd really rather not copy and paste chapter by chapter in new thread after new thread.

I saw in that closed thread down somewhere on this board that people are allowed to post links to their work on fanfiction.net. My fanfic isn't on fanfiction.net, it's actually on my own message board. I was wondering if it would be allowed for me to post a link the thread with my fanfic.

I know that message boards like this one have rules against advertising. And well, this post is starting to look a lot like an advertisement what with me coming in and asking if I can post a link to my own message board. But really, I'm not trying to gather new members for my board. It's fine the way it is. I just wonder if there's a more convenient way for me to post my story here since it's already up somewhere else.

That was just my first question! My second question is this: I notice that this board is called "The Forum of Zelda: Wind Waker." Does that mean you won't take a fanfic based on Ocarina of Time?

And my third question: the story has one instance of sexual content. It's nothing explicit. It's all hinted at and then moves on to the next scene before we see anything really happen. I would say that it's no worse than what happened right at the beginning of "Wrath of a God" if you've read that one on NintendoLand. I'll be happy to show that scene to anyone who's concerned, but I don't want to spoil the story in case I'm just getting worked up over nothing.

I don't have a policy on posting links to other bords, but at the same time it would be highly pointless to make a topic out of it (though you could cheat and jsut post a link in another post here and it'd be okay).

It shouldn't take much time to post twelve chapters (that's a nicely-sized fic, by the by), but if you're feeling absolutely and completely against the idea, I'm open to some other suggestions for what could be done.

And yes, you can post non-Wind Waker things here. This is jsut a "forum name theme" that one of the other mods thought up. You can talk about anything Zelda here.

(2) Wy hit the nail on the head. Yes, we take all Zelda stuff. Even if it's LoZ or AoL stuff. We just won't take that cheap ripoff Dark Cloud here, no siree.

(3) Let's put it in this regard. We've got 13-year-olds running around this place. Or at the very least, I'm pretty sure about it. To sum it all up in a nutshell (help! i'm trapped in this nutshell!), so long as you feel comfortable with a 13-year-old reading it, that's fine. Heck, Titanic got a PG-13 rating and we won't even go to that artsy-smartsy scene in the middle, nor the scene in the car. If it's somewhere along there and down, you're not going to have problems. Worst case, if it is something, bracket it or something with [Warning Sex Scene Approaching] or something; that way you'll guarantee that all the 13-year-olds will read it.

(1) Possible ideas.
(a) Do as the Romans do. Create two topics and interlink them (see Wy's fanfic for details). Add a chapter to the story every day. S'not the best way to do it, but it works.
(b) I'll let you post a link to it if it's from another site. [Warning to all other members: this is primarily because our beloved member ASKED first, so don't go running amok with URLs! ] In that case, you only need a single topic.
(c) If you're looking a wacky solution, heck, format it in HTML and send it to me (PM me for details on this) and I'll temporarily host it for you in my personal webspace. Temporary means for... maybe a good year or so. I usually forget what I have hosted for who anyways. [img]smile.gif[/img] So long as it doesn't take up megabytes of space (and after all, it is text so it shouldn't!), I'll be more than happy to do that.

There you go. The not-quite-bottom line. Just some ideas to consider. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Well, the reason copying and pasting the fanfic is such a hassle is that each individual chapter is at least 20 pages long (wait a minute. If there are 12 of them and there are 150 total pages...the math doesn't work out...but I know that there isn't a chapter in there that's shorter than 20 and that means...good grief! I've created a 200+ page monster!)

You see, what happens on my computer is that it will only copy and paste a certain amount of text at a time. If I were to post a chapter right now in this reply by copying and pasting the text into the dialogue box where I'm typing right now, I would only be able to copy about half of the chapter. My computer just won't let me put any more text into a dialogue box like this one. I guess it's because my computer is old and needs more memory.

So basically each chapter requires making two posts to put it all in. Actually, some chapters require three. My biggest one needed four posts. And since my computer is old and slow, each post takes a while. I have literally spent half an hour getting up one chapter on my forum, and while I guess that might not add up to too much time, I frankly shudder at having to post all that at once.

So with your permission, I would like to post a link to the fanfic right here in this topic so that I don't waste another thread. But before I do that, we have to address this matter of the mature content.

I'm not comfortable having a 13 year old read that scene. I had a 14 year old read it on my board and ask what was going on because she didn't understand all the implications. Needless to say, that was a rather thorny situation that I would rather avoid. It's one single scene in Chapter 7. Later chapters make some reference to it, but what actually happens is never spelled out, even in Chapter 7. All the same, I know that some underage people will understand it.

That sounds really wishy-washy, doesn't it? Well, maybe it would be best if I just showed the scene to one of you fine people. It will spoil some of the story, but not too much. Meantime, I have put a clear and visible warning on Chapter 7 saying that it has mature content.

I would appreciate it if someone could read the scene (it's one paragraph) and make a judgment call. It would make me feel better about posting this.
