The last mention I could find of it in this topic was in 2004 but it's a dead link now. Or should I just be asking if anyone is old school enough here to remember it? |

Here's the new site they're currently on. They're in the middle of trying out a new system at the moment. Hyrulian War :: Index ![]() |

I notice that the Undead race has been nixed entirely from the HW canon--what the hell is that crap? I go to all the trouble of inventing a race in HWII, only to have some jackhole knock them right on out of existence? I don't know what to say about that, except that it'd make Kokiri Kid, TML, and Pigeon5 weep to hear such blasphemy. __________________ Boo--the only dude bad enough to rescue the president |

The idea was that the hyrulians got over their racism and now have wars against eachother for other stupid reasons, like religion. The undead are still present, along with a host of other various Zelda creatures. It's just that they're now all mixed together, fighting for whichever cause they feel like. I do, however, agree that the game has changed so much that it's not even the same game anymore. ![]() |

Did you play back in the day, Crav? Back when it was like an online Zelda-riffic 'Axis and Allies and Warcraft II had a baby and taught it kung-fu'? Christ. I'm getting pissed off just thinking about how awesome it isn't anymore. __________________ Boo--the only dude bad enough to rescue the president

When it first moved though, that's when I started playing and I remember being a Zora carpenter one war and then the Gerudo general another war. Man, I love those maps. I think I even wrote the Gazette once or twice. I got out of it once EXP and all that stuff was introduced. And wow, I'm appalled at the new HW. I scoffed when I read what somewhat wrote in the Hyrulian War Classic forum: " Quote:

That was the long down time I mentioned. Ultimately, the game became the mess it is now because of constant fighting between the players which drove the cooler members off. That and the constant mislead efforts to fix problems in the game that were either nonexistant or caused by the players themselves. It's a pity. I still keep tabs on them for the heck of it, but this is really starting to look like the end of it. ![]() |

The map was based loosely on the OoT overworld map. There were six teams (Hylians, Kokiri, Zora, Goron, Gerudo, and the mighty Undead). Each race started out with its own capital city (the Undead, being non-canonical, had as their capital the non-canon city of Burmunica, a corrupted and destroyed Hylian outpost in the far-off frozen northern wastes) and a couple major territories; the rest of the map was divided up into zones ripe for conquest (each new zone 'liberated' added resources to the war chest). Each team could ally itself with one other at a time (in order to prevent trust-building). The tactical side of the game was handled by a four-star general, whose duties would include the deploying and moving troops, harvesting resources, and allocating resources towards the development of new weapons. Combat between two armies would be decided either by simple mathematics (aka my 200-man army fights your 100-man army; my army wins, losing 100 men in the process) or by a more complex formula made up by the warmod/referee at the time. The four-star general was also in charge of diplomacy--we were encouraged to make and break alliances, wheel and deal for resources, lie, backstab, and cheat for the greater glory of our nations. The OG side of the game was handled by whoever else wanted to play (the Gorons and Zora nearly always got shafted here, because let's be honest--what idiot would rather play as a big stupid rock-man than as an evil skeleton warrior?) The side that employed them paid a nominal fee each round for each OG player. The OG players were allowed to sort of make their own way, and their influence was limited to how well they roleplayed and how well they wrote. I remember one instance where someone playing an Undead spy camped out near a Hylian army; the warmod took his 'intel' into account by allowing my Undead army to flank the enemy, dealing twice as much damage as they might ordinarily. It was terrific. There was never a really hard-and-fast rule set to the game; it was mostly designed to be fun, and rules-lawyering isn't fun. The game could really only be as good as the group of players you had. Still, assuming a good group of players, I wouldn't mind seeing a new iteration of the game spring up here at VGF. __________________ Boo--the only dude bad enough to rescue the president

I never knew about this game, sounds like a lot of fun. But other than the generals, how exactly do the individual people RP? If the General controls everything, I'm not sure how that'd work. Do you basically just react to what the General tells you to do? I'd definitely be interested in doing this. |

It was one of the coolest things ever during that period, at least for me. The game's biggest problem however was always the Warmod and the insane amount of pressure put on said individual. I did it for one war and was completely overwhelmed. Granted, this might have been because I was fifteen years old and totally incapable of taking charge of what was a roughly fifty person game, but it still strikes me as an incredibly difficult job. Not sure if I'd play again, but I think I have some of the older topics saved somewhere involving myself, Boo, TML, Pigeon5, Mallard, JMRO, and possibly Kokiri Kid (10 points for every person on that list you remember) engaging in battle and the like. There were several other people who went by so many different RPG-ish names that I can't remember who was who, but I remember that they were incredibly dedicated and one hosted the game for a while on his own website. All in all, a good time in my life. Great memories. |

Well said, old friend. It's been a while, hasn't it? I haven't been to this forum in... I guess 4, 5 years? Being the War mod for Hyrulian War certainly was a stressful and time consuming job. Add in the other things I had going on at the time (school, family, life in general), and it just got too much to take, which is why I ended up leaving the game and the forum. I probably should have handled the situation better, but I was also only about 14 or 15 years old at the time and rather immature. Looking back on it now, I could've done a lot of things better, but can't live a life full of regrets, right? All in all, it a was a good time, I have some fond memories of it and the people I experienced it with. Though things have changed, it's nice to see a few familiar faces around here. How you all doing? Long time no see. By the way, I remember all 6 (7 if you include myself) people that you listed, so I guess that means I get 70 points. ![]()

Surely, now, I haven't been that much of a lurker, have I? __________________ Boo--the only dude bad enough to rescue the president |
