Link is cooler than Ganondorf. That's why he's so far ahead.
Sephiroth is cooler than Cloud, but Cloud has a lot of fanboys/fangirls. That makes it closer.

O-o Erm. Well, Sephiroth is more bishy than Ganondorf, so that wins the support of fangirls. And though some like Cloud, his character weaknesses and Sephiroth's badassness make for more Sephiroth fans.

Ganondorf isn't the greatest bad guy around, but link is honestly the coolest hero, in my opinion. So it's kinda lopsided.
