Read the article, saw the pics, great stuff. Can't wait for this game. There is definately a huge gameplay element we don't know of yet, but I suppose that was obvious before the article eitherway.

Hell yeah. Fits me like a glove. (Don't have WoW, though.)

Heh. Maybe that's how things work in Cloudcuckooland, or wherever it is you live; however, here on Earth, swords fall squarely into the category "sharp things for hitting people with". They've been presented that way in every game in the series so far; even in the sword-laser-riffic days of LoZ and AOL, when swords were imbued with a touch of magic (similar to the magic that goes into every Keebler cookie), the primary function still revolved around stabbity-stabbing baddies in the face.

Then why is it that Link had the Beam Sword technique in LoZ? In the Zelda series, swords were always used for both magic and traditional combat. So the world in which swords do work for the purpose of magic is not Earth, but instead, Hyrule.

^ Considering the likelihood that your life was often not at full health, the threshold for such magical laser beams of goodness, probabilistically speaking swords are still used for the stabbity-stabbity technique.

I'm not saying that it isn't used for combat as well, just that it is also used for magic. I believe that Zelda will use her's for magic.

Ocarina of Time showed that Link could focus magical energy into his blade and release it with the Spin Attack, regardless of health.

^ A slice of the sword even with magic is inevitably a stabbity-stabbity technique by definition.

^Good man. Oh, and Link has the ability to the spin attack in OoT before he gets magic power, with the plain old Kokiri Sword. To my way of thinking, the fact that you can do a Magic Spin Slash once you learn how to do magic indicates that the swords themselves are merely normal swords that Link uses in moves he already knew, except that he powers the moves themselves up with magic.

As for the sword-laser, the conditions for using it depend on Link's state, not the sword he's using. I'd compare this to a magic-user who needs to be in a perfectly calm state of mind (aka a state of mind one would be pretty far from while bleeding profusely from Moblin-inflicted spear-wounds in the face) in order to wreak his horrible death-magic.

That is what I just said Cap'n Boo from Timbuktu. Zelda will probably use her sword for magic.

I also know that the sword is mainly used for combat The Missing Link. However, Cap'n Boo from Timbuktu's comment was that Zelda is unable to use it for combat for numerous reasons. This is why I suggested the possibility of magic use.

^^ Why would you need a SWORD then, pray tell? If you could just call the spells that make the peoples fall down, why have it channeled through a sword?

Take Lord of the Rings. Gandalf has a sword when facing the Balrog, but he doesn't use it for "magic". The only time he physically mixes magic with the blade is at the final strike when he calls lightning into the sword and THEN stabs it (stabbity-stabbity) into the Balrog. All of this other spells are done with the staff or, presumably, his own effort.

It's simply a silly defense to say that you won't be using a sword to hit people because you can use magic.... but I'm going to be carrying a sword anyways. Just because it looks cool to hold.

Tell me about it. She shot me three times the first time I fought Ganondorf. What a crock!

I'm surprised Boo hasn't yet suggested that Zelda's sword isn't some sort of elaborate royal kitchen knife.

Anyone who's read Terry Pratchett knows the danger of magic swords.

Dai Grepher: To make the spell more effective, reduce casting time, strengthen the spell, or to localize the spell into one target.

Perhaps her sword can slay certain enemies that can't be killed normally, like the Master Sword is to Ganon.

Or perhaps her sword can unseal certain doors/passages/etc.

Yeah, Kargath. But Zelda wasn't written by Terry Pratchett.

In the CD-i Zeldas, the sword was magical and if you stabbed the townspeople, it made them talk...

*ahem*

Why not just give these abilities to Zelda straight off the bat? It's not like we can't make up the world. It's not like we can't make up a new magic system anytime. If the Princess is as remotely powerful as she was in Ocarina of Time, you remember, the big white hadoken blast at Ganondorf, she wouldn't need a sword to do any of that. I think you're really grasping at straws here.

Quote:

It's called an example, silly goose. Sure it may reference (OMG) some other topic, but let's face it, I can't think of any sword off the top of my head ever invented whose SOLE purpose was to have some sort of magical enhancement upon the bearer AND NOT be used to kill things with its sharp blades. If you could name one... just one... sword that was never allowed to be used as a stabbing or slicing weapon... or even a sword that was highly unuseful as a stabbling/slicing weapon, then you might have a decent argument.

Quote:
Dai Grepher: It can also lure the enemy into a trap by making enemy think he or she is attacking a swordfighter, then catch them off guard when the blade is filled with magic to be used against them by a spellcaster.
I give you two scenarios. Tell me which one sounds more reasonable to you.

Scenario #1: You see a poor, defenseless girl in the corner screaming and crying her eyes out. This is the person you've been told to capture.

Scenario #2: You see a regally dressed woman brandishing a sword in a somewhat fluent manner, her eyes scornfully looking at you. This is the person you've been told to capture.

Which of these two princesses would, you know, sound easier to capture, hm? The one playing on the "I'm a pink princess and I like flowers!" girl, or the one that has a remote shot of knowing how to wield a weapon? Personally, I think were I trying to fool someone into getting really close so that I could spellblast and pwn their sorry behinds, I'd play the first option because then I have double the element of surprise.

Dear gosh, I could argue your own side better than you guys are. However, even if I were to do so, when it boils down to it, Occam's Razor is going to slice your idea to smithereens.
