The Sidequest Topic

Here is a little place to talk about those great things that give our favorite games some nice replay value. Be they hard as hell, easy, or just plain awesome, care to share?

Earlier this morning, I was playing PH. Who here has done the Golden Frog Chief sidequest? I did. It was annoying as hell... but when you finish a sidequest like that, it gives you a fuzzy feeling. I got a pat on the back from myself for this one.

So, in this sidequest, there's one random stone that tells you to hit the other four stones according to a riddle.

Now, you can either guess and hit them randomly.. OR...

(spoiler if you want to do this on your own)
Spoiler Below
You have to map out the whole island. The riddle says things like 'the eye sees, the rudder steers, the spout sprays'... etc. So, you map out the island and it is in the shape of a whale. The whale has its tail, a fin, a spout, and an eye... as well as gossip stones in those locations. You hit them in the order of the riddle.

Yeah, I was really happy when I figured that out. To be completely honest, I just started mapping the island because Linebeck said 'there should be treasure near the center of the island'. Then I started mapping out the lakes and trees and stuff... Good thing, eh?

So, now that I'm finally shutting up...

Anyone wanna talk about sidequests?

I need to buy PH...My DS has been itching for a new game.

The first sidequest that comes to my mind is the Kafei and Anju one. Rewards aren't that spectacular, but it was still a very good quest.

I love that sidequest so much. I do agree with you, however. For such a huge and significant sidequest, it had a lousy reward.

...Well, actually, you got like 5 rewards by doing it twice. So whatevs.

The great thing about Majora's Mask is that all of the trillions of sidequests it holds are actually, in a way, important to the story. That's what I like about it.

And in PH, well... I like exploring islands when I'm too lazy to do the Ocean King's Temple. ><

One of my favorite challenges is to start a new file in Majora's mask and before you complete a heart container, you MUST go fight the 2 large dodongos inside the grotto in the snowhead region, with just your kokiri sword and shield.

It's fun because it's so freaking difficult. You have to make sure you don't get swiped by their tail and that you are out of range of the other dodongo's fire while you are circling around one of them. Did I mention three hits and you're dead?

As for other sidequests, I enjoyed the many minigames in Majora's mask, namely the swamp shooting range. It's an action packed shooting range, not to mention I love killing the crows in that one, lol.

My favorite is the Figurine/Mysterious Shell quest from MC. Takes 5-6 hours and rewards you with 136(133?) figurines.

I also liked the Poe Quest, (Not done yet) the sea/treasure chart quest and the things associated with it, the MC Kinstone quest and the Roll Goal quest in TP.

Kafei's Sidequest.

Easily the biggest pain in the arse sidequest in any videogame I've ever played. You have to painstakingly go through a series of events, travel back in time, and go through them again, and do them all flawlessly within the time given, or else you have to start over at Day One, just so in the end you can get the damned Couple's Mask so you can get a piece of heart from the freaking mayor.

I did not enjoy that one.

I hated Kafei's sidequest for all those reasons, but the worst part was the very short time you had at 7 PM on the third day to do that one part. Screw up that one part and you screw up the whole damn thing.

I also hated the Treasure Chest Game in OoT, mainly because I don't cheat in it. The Bombchu game in MM at the honey-darling shop pissed me off, too.

I also hated the bug finding sidequest in TP because every time I give that girl a bug, it reminds me of how sad my life is. -CSM

Lol, the bugs. Didn't take long for me to crack down the pattern. If you found 1 bug in a region, then you find the other one in that region. That was a boring sidequest I think, because all you get is a bag upgrade for 1 bug, and another for 24. Otherwise you just got money. It was quite redundant if you ask me.

TP's poe sidequest also while fun was also disappointing after you killed 20. Becuase its not infinite full-wallet cash, the silver rupee reward is almost useless unless you're going back and forth to pay that hobo that asks for money on the street lol.

Yes, that was the big thing that frustrated me. I hated that thing with a passion.

Hey, I never said I didn't like her.

I loved the strange, perverse way she'd describe the things she'd want to do with the bugs.

I didn't really do that bug quest in TP...I was always too occupied to stop for a second to catch that bug.

Eh, if I was on the main quest and I saw a bug floating around, I'd go and pick it up, but I wouldn't bother chasing one around the whole damn place like that one bug in Gerudo Desert.

For the most part I waited until after I'd beaten the game to bother with those.

Does 'wander around forever and kill monsters' count as a side-quest? Because otherwise I can't think of anything from LoZ...

I'm not dissing her because of the way she is. Hell, what is she, like, 8? She's allowed to do that.

I'm dissing her because of what she did to me: made me realize how pathetic my life is. -CSM

I loved Kafei's sidequest... mostly because I've completed it so many times that I never ever EVER lose on Day 3.

The bug thing? I never actually bothered with it. I don't know why. I just didn't.

Also, in PH, I love all of the little secrets you can solve on each island to get a treasure map and salvage for said treasure. The rewards can be schweet, and it's fun- it makes me feel like a virtual treasure hunter. Omg.

The main thing that makes me so OMFG OBSESSIVE ONEONEONEONE about sidequests is, as almost all of you probably know by now, if I love a game I can't just play it once. I have to play it again and agian andoamveoajgoeahgafjielajfelw.... you get the idea. Sidequests make said replays more enjoyable and awesome.

Oh, and I have this weird phobia of video game time limits. Like, during the OoT trading sequence, despite the ENORMOUS amount of times I've done said sequence, I always ALWAYS get jumpy and nervous and freaked when I have to rush to a place. Even though I am well aware that I don't lose anything if I fail, and also I will probably NOT fail.

...Yeah, hopefully the Ocean King's Temple will get rid of that issue...

Palace of the Ocean King is only fun if you do it the way it's meant to be done: Write notes on your map, figure out how to shave time, and use your new weapons to make things easier as you go. At first I thought the PotOK was really annoying, but as it went on I realized how much fun it could be.

I do enjoy it thoroughly. I just also get jumpy under time limits. Period.

Anyway, I love to procrastinate from the main quest with sidequests. Usually before the Shadow temple, Great Bay Temple, and Temple of the Ocean King.

Procrastination is fun.
