I haven't played it. But I really want to. I've heard it's really good.

Link's awakening, IMO, is the second-most underrated Zelda, next to, of course, AoL. Fantasmic game. Original dungeons, difficulty was high enough but not insurmountable...everything about the game was likeable for me. Definitely in my top 5 Zelda games.

It actually is very hard to play and has THE hardest puzzles. Also, because of the difficulty to read the map, it's easy to get lost. -CSM

Lest we forget Bird's Tower? That level was awesome. One of my favorite Zelda Bosses.

That's Eagle's Tower.

If there was one thing I didn't like about the game, it was the Mirror Shield. It didn't do anything except in one boss fight. Also the second Power Bracelet. -CSM

Link's Awakening is certainly underrated. I mean, it's basically a clone of Link to the Past, but certainly not in a bad way. There are a few major differences, and all of them are still good:

(1) The dungeons are (mostly) just one floor; however, the dungeons are still challenging due to the enemies, the random 2-D teleportation staircases, the puzzles, and so forth.
(2) There's a story that makes you CARE about the world. Marin is perhaps the greatest addition to the game because you literally care what happens to the girl by the end of the game, and though you want to beat the game, you do so rather remorsefully.
(3) The overworld, though it's fragmented a bit more to make you not explore certain areas until the game thinks you're "ready," is still fairly developed and almost serves as a giant maze/dungeon, as in you're always asking yourself "how do I get from here to there?"
(4) Using two non-sword items in tandem with one another was an extremely good idea (like the bomb arrows and dashing while jumping or shielding).

All in all, I think the game is excellent. I really should go back and play it again.

Yeah, for a GBC game, Link's Awakening was particularly heart-wrenching.

Isn't there a color version of this game? Are there any significant differences that make the original version better? I really need to get acquainted with the 2-D Zelda series. I got real close to beating Oracle, but dungeon 8 became pretty frickin' hard. Otherwise, I only beat LoZ.

The color version added some neat features. Unfortunately, they really watered down the challenge.
All the dungeons used to give you one cryptic hint on how to solve the toughest puzzles. In the color version they give you three or four hints. And by hints I mean they actually TELL you, word for word, how to beat the dungeon. They added lines of text to make the bosses basicly scream out their own weaknesses to you while you fight them.

So basicly the color version completely sucks the challenge out of all of the puzzles. I'd suggest playing the black and white version first.

There was a color version?

The only "color" version I ever got to play was on the Super Game Boy.

^It was for the GB color. They called it Link's Awakening DX.

On the other hand, the color version added the photo sidequest. Throught the game, you can try to find hidden points where a photographer pops up and takes your picture. The pictures can be pretty funny, but it doesn't really have any other reward. (you could print out the pictures if you had a GB printer)

They also added an extra dungeon (with a new item that also makes the game much easier) and updated the ending.

So it's not all bad. It's just a shame they felt they had to give away the answer to the toughest puzzles in the game.

Still, I've noticed that many people who played the color version first say that the game was too easy. It's really up to you, if you think the added content justifies the cut difficulty.

The feather was an awesome item, and should be in every game, Zelda or not.
