Ocarina of Time, 3DS version

I figured this remake deserves its own thread for discussion.

Some new screens are showing up:

plus a few more after the jump:

Gamed.nl - [Upd.] Nieuwe Ocarina of Time info en screens

This is the first I've seen of the menu system, and I'm certainly intrigued as to how the controls are all going to work out. The graphical improvements are certainly welcome, although I've seen some comparable or perhaps superior texture quality in the various high-detail texture hacks that have been making the rounds for the N64 rom. The new character models are, however, a huge improvement.

My only complaint about the visuals pertains to how they've obviously kept the same, gaudy colors and rigid terrain from the N64 version. Just seems like laziness that they haven't gotten more creative, and smoothed out those harsh artificial corners.

Noice! I wish to get this system even more now...>.>
Maybe I'll finally be able to finish OoT if it's handheld and on the go.

The game is a remake, not a reimagining, of the game. They aren't going to be wholly recreating every last asset with gratuitous graphical fidelity. Up-rezzing textures is a fairly quick and easy process... especially when you don't really need to do THAT much with it; the 3DS screen has fewer gross pixels than 480i/576i screens and only slightly more pixels when you ignore the interlacing. Taking every model -- terrain included -- and adding more polygons and vertices is quite a task. Especially since changing the actual geometry of assets requires an entirely new level of QA support to make sure that the collision works as expected and no weird (and obvious) bugs/hacks/glitches can result from it. All they need is to focus on fixing the things that will get attention and screen time, and you've got the 80% of the game looking better.

(Also, this game will probably have half of the staff on it that the original OoT did, which limits what they can do.)

I find myself having trouble getting excited about OoT3D, and it's for two basic reasons. First, I by necessity can't be excited about the 3DS until I actually physically experience the 3DS; I've heard it's good, but I want to know how good it is and how much the 3D capabilities really do for me over that of the DS. Second, I already own three copies Ocarina of Time: the N64 cartridge, Master Quest, and the Collector's Disc on the GCN. I could have even bought it on Virtual Console, but I had no temptation to do so there. Unless the game has some stark differences from existing versions (i.e., the 3D is sooooooo amazing, or they've actually made some aspects of the game different, or they added content), I can't find myself getting excited over it.

What if the idea were put forth that you have never experienced OoT in any handheld format? That could possibly be an entirely new experience with the game you miss. Pass it up?

Were the game a complete replica of the original, the only difference being what system it was on (even a console vs. a handheld), what difference does that make? Who buys BOTH the 360 and PS3 versions of an identical game?

Now if there's a content difference, then, as I said, that's a different story.

Looks cool. I don't know if I'll get it, though. I mean, I downloaded the original on the VC hardly even a year ago.

I'm with TML on this one. I have every version of OoT and frankly don't have time to play through a beefed up version of the same game just because it's on a 3D handheld game. But more than likely my son will demand this game since OoT was the first RPG/Adventure game I had him play once he had the skill to beat LoZ on the NES I purchased. Which by he way "WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THAT THEY CHANGED THE LOOK OF THE NES??!!!" I went into a Electronc store to buy an NES for my son when he turned 4 so he could get used to OG gaming controls. And to my suprise the guy behind the counter brought me some wierd looking gaming device and I was like.....uhhh dude this is not an NES. He assured me it was and I'll be damned if he wasn't right. I feel bad that my son never go the pleasure of learning how to manipulate that damn lowering bar that drops the game into position once it been worn out from excessive use.

Note: by age 5 my son had decimated all my NES games and was soon asking me to let him play on the GC. He actually never touches the N64 unless it's to play Golden Eye or OoT. And we use the Wii as more of a family gaming system.

Yeah, I know, I've done raw cgi for game models before. See, but I already covered that whole part with the "baww we'll have to hire people to work" attitude by calling it laziness. If they'd gone to the effort of actually smoothing out and better realizing the game world, they'd have a much larger audience interested in this thing.

I would've taken the opportunity to create a short sidegame played as Sheik/Zelda, in the same continuity, btw. Obviously they're just trying to pull launch games out of thin air for free money, with the main goal of inflating the shelf-image of the 3DS. Same as all of those callous Mario Advance ports.

At least Link won't say "Wow! Lucky!" half the time when he gets a rupee.

You'll still have to put up with Navi though.

Or at least make Navi bigger so it'll be harder to miss her with arrows.

I only own this game twice over.

...

I'm pretty sure I need it another time.

If anything, the altered menu and the kokiri forest are what intrigue me. The former implies that maybe, JUST MAYBE, it won't take an entire ****ing minute to change boots in the freaking water temple since you do it about EIGHTY MILLION TIMES. And the latter actually looks like a FOOORESSSST. Granted the waterfall isn't beautiful and it still is far from realistic, but still. Damn, it's an improvement. Also Link looks like a human. These screens are tugging at my stupid nostalgic hearstrings and adding purty vivid colors.

I'm easily convinced. Plus I was gonna get the 3DS for Paper Mario 3DS anyway, so DOUBLE SCORE.

I've noticed that the skin tone in use is not the pasty yellow of the recently dead. Just thought I'd mention.

Im very interested on this for 2 good reasons, first if it's a realease game i can buy it and play it through and say i finally beat it.

Second is to see if some of the scrapped content from the 64DD will have made it, i know some stuff was thrown in when master quest was released but it dons't cut out more "hidden fun stuff".

And due to this it's easy to see if they just ported it to 3D!!!!! or if the made some changes to make it flow better.

Don't think I'm ever buying another handheld. Also I was never exactly OoT's biggest fan to begin with. I guess it's good news for people that want both a 3DS and more OoT, though.

See, it's things like that (or possibly, adding a sixth adult dungeon -- The Light Temple or whatever), not tightening up the graphics on level 3, that would get a lot more people interested in the game. And the former is less effort than the latter; win-win-win.

I'm kinda waiting to see it in action though. The screens look promising, and sometimes games look a lot better in motion than they do in screenshots (read: Wind Waker).

I'm looking forward to this. I'd love me some OoT-on-the-go.
