What if Zelda... were an '80s movie?

I can't help but secretly wish this thing existed... even though it would easily fall into the '80s B-movie category.

Like all the other movies based off of games that were made in the 90s? Some of those were pretty bad. Heck. Even some of the ones now would.

I don't know what I would think of this. I think the cartoon was bad enough. If they ever did make a Zelda movie, I'd prefer either basing it on a story not told in the games or using another villain besides Ganon (i.e. Vaati, Malladus). I wouldn't mind seeing something like this, though. Theorizing boards like LA, ZI, ZU and this one in the past, from what I hear would go completely insane from trying to fit something like this into the timeline.

I love this trailer. The best part is how they made it look like a preview on a VHS tape from the 80's you pulled out from your TV cupboard.

Actually, it's a total parody of the movie The Breakfast Club. Which is very similar, but whatevs!

^Huh. I thought were definite references to Ferris in there...lot of John Hughes references, actually. There was a 16 candles reference too.

A touch of Say Anything, too.
In fact, this whole trailer is basically Easy A, but with The Scarlet Letter swapped out for Legend of Zelda.

And remember, "I'm-a Luigi, number one!"

To be fair, stuff like the SMB movie is so strange that it becomes kitsch - as in it's liked for its qualities that would otherwise make it so low quality, because it sets a point to reference to and becomes familiar to viewers. I like the film a lot, and not because it's a good adaptation. It's just part of that strange zeitgeist of adventure/adaptation film from the time. Like Hackers or Demolition Man or TMNT.

Not to say there aren't references to other movies, but here's the side-by-side trailer comparison.

Edit: Okay, so apparently it isn't the trailer for the movie, but it's paired against scenes from the movie. Although I'm pretty sure you're right that the bit at the very end is definitely "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."

He does it after the credits in the movie.

^Indeed. And the Triforce underwear is obviously a reference to Sixteen Candles.

I was referring to how hooky some of those movies were. I like some of them.

Movies. Multiple in there. Not all from Breakfast Club.

Midna: Maybe Zelda really likes Link.
Navi: If you were Zelda, would you honestly fall for a guy like Link?
Midna: Yeah.
Navi: Yeah.
Tingle: Yeah.

The smile on Tingle's actor's face made my day.
