For or against: Majora's Mask remake for 3DS?

There have been whispers of this project happening, but no real concrete evidence out yet. What do you guys think about it? Is it a good idea?

I, personally, would be in favor of it. I totally loved the OoT rehaul, and MM hasn't gotten as much remake love as OoT has anyway. It'd be great for the game to get some attention and I think there would be a lot of people out there who would buy it. Not to mention I've been kind of itching to play MM again.

(semi-related: this thread got posted in Ninty Main forum about a Zelda 3DS bundle which looks pretty sweet.)

Haven't got a 3DS, nor plan to, so, from a strictly intellectual standpoint, it's kind of a moot question to me...

...that said, I always eternally and forever prefer game companies to break new ground rather than retreading the old. MM exists (for good or ill) and is already very, very available to the masses---does porting MM to the 3DS fulfill some need that wouldn't be sated by a brand new Zelda game?

Maybe I'm a sucker, but I thought the OoT remake was just fantastic. It looked and sounded great, and now I have a handheld version of a game I love. Likewise, I'd dig an MM remake, probably even more because I like it more than I like OoT.

And AFAIK, if they were to make a new Zelda game, it would be a completely different team than the one that would be remaking MM.

Nah, I say enough with the remakes and just leave the original alone.

Same argument that I had for OoT 3D. Sometimes Nintendo's remakes/re-releases can be pretty cool, but most of the time I'd just rather have them working on new titles. Unless they added new quests or gameplay features, updated graphics and neat 3D effects wouldn't justify me buying a game I already own, even if it is a game I really enjoy like MM.

The question is why ISN'T there a remake yet.

Maybe it's just my nostalgia kicking in, then. Still, I don't think it would detract from making new Zelda Games.

interesting opinion there monstrman, i think you have a point there as i think MM had a great concept going on and it intrigued me more than OOT did; that said, OOT had that red line in the story you followed and doing most stuff felt like going one step closer the final conflict Chasing cucos not included.

If i would buy MM if a remake came out, probably not.

One part being i already own the game and think it looks exelent the way it is, I'm not against fixing some graphical limitations they had at the time but if they take their time and add something that we haven't seem (not minigames thank you) i would be more inclined to buy the game not to a 100% probability but steady up in the 70% department.

Considering the studio that made the OoT remake is headed by the man who created the Mana series, I'd rather he spend his time on something original (preferably for Nintendo to publish as a new IP).

Personally, I still find the OoT update to be a bit underwhelming. They avoided going out of their way to improve geometry, yet the new town model they had no choice but to make is distinctly the opposite with totally gaudy new designs. The textures themselves don't quite do it for me on the 3DS, anyway - the thing needs something like double its VRAM. It certainly wasn't another Zero Mission (or even Sword of Mana, on the subject of Grezzo).

Of course, there's the matter of me not liking the time mechanisms in Majora's Mask, anyway. I'd like an option to disable the whole teleporting-back-to-the-start BS. Also, the ability to brutally maim Tingle would be an appreciated addition.

I'm not really for it or against it, but if they did make a Majora's Mask remake I probably wouldn't be all that enthralled about it. I'd rather them make an original Legend of Zelda game on the 3DS, or maybe even a remake of ALttP in 3D.

But it'd still affect whatever plans Big N had for new 3DS Zelda, wouldn't it. Everything changes the landscape. Does Nintendo work as hard on a new game if they can retread an old one and still turn a significant profit? For that matter, does working on an MM rerelease increase the likelihood that Nintendo will again farm out development of the new Zelda game to a second- or third-party, the way they did with the Oracles and MC? I honestly don't know.

For for for for for for for for for for for for for for for for for.

I already fangirled about how much I love the OoT remake. I know most people disagree, but I think it is fabulous. One of my favorite games ever, rehauled but still the same game. Also it comes with an unglitched version of Master Quest. And the sound quality was reaaaaally nice, IMO. I loved it.

I think I would DIE walking around in a rehauled Clock Town. OoT's villages and areas were sparser than MM's, and considering how much improvement and detail OoT got, MM would simply blow my freaking socks off. And I think Eyegore and Gohmess would give me nightmares.

Don't get me wrong. I love new games. New is good. But if they remade MM I would grab that **** off of the shelves the day of release.

MM would be nice as a remake. The main quest isn't as meaty which makes me think they'd add more besides a Master Quest and Boss Rematches.

On the other hand, a brand new Zelda game for the 3DS would probably be nice.

So this far we have come to the conclusion that: We are not completely for it but not completely against it, sounds like a good political statement BTW.

We're diplomats! Who needs opinions?

The happy mask salesman from Majora's Mask is still one of my all time favorite characters from any game series.

AI, I still haven't really gotten a grasp on your hatred for the time mechanism. Could you elaborate on it?

Okay, you remember playing Seiken Densetsu 3 with me a bit, and how you were like "okay let's go, these people don't say anything important" etc? Well, I'm always like that in adventure games. I go and press action buttons on every single thing. In Doom, I find secret doors by pressing space on every square foot of wall. In world 7 of Mario 3, I tried every pipe.

That they made a dungeon crawler-oriented game with puzzle elements have a time limit means they made a game I don't like. OoT already crippled the whole combat-timing elements of Zelda, and then they tried to justify half or less of a dev cycle being spent on MM by penalizing players for taking their time doing whatever it is they feel like. The whole concept of why the game was made that way irks me to start with. IMO a remake could strongly benefit MM, but I think they need to finish making it before they can consider remaking it.

You know, everything Majora's Mask tried to do but pissed me off works fine in Chibi Robo, since it's not really an installment in an adventure game series that was previously so combat focused. If you haven't played Chibi Robo yet, and you liked MM, give it a shot.

And everything the day-night cycle MM accomplishes has pretty much been done with Fallout and the Elder Scrolls since then, or before then in the case of Fallout or Ultima.

I guess that makes sense. I guess the reason why you hate the time mechanism is the same reason why I love it. It always made me feel rushed, made me feel threatened, made me feel like I had to get stuff done or else. Now for me, that just absorbs me into the game. It makes me feel like Link, like I have to save these people ASAP or they will all die. When I play MM, I'm running for my life. Meanwhile, it gives me an excuse to take an entire 3-day cycle and dick around while not feeling like I'm wasting the time of the people whose lives I'm trying to save.

Maybe I empathize too much with fictional characters, but I always put myself in the shoes of the protagonist, especially in RPGs. I need to save these people, and I'm on the clock. I loved that feeling, and it's part of why MM was one of my favorites.

On that, we're never gonna reconcile our opinions, so whatever. But what do you mean by saying the game is unfinished? The game's just as complete as any other Zelda game to me.
