TDK EXTENDS SHREK LICENSE
May 1, 2002
TDK Mediactive and Dreamworks announced an extension
of their Shrek agreement, which gives TDK the exclusive worldwide
rights to Shrek and its sequel for all platforms. The Shrek
games so far have sold over 1 million copies on the Xbox,
PC, GameBoy Color, and GBA, with plans to launch products
for more platforms and also in Asia in the future.
"'Shrek' is not only a great movie franchise,
but a powerful video game franchise, as well," said Vincent
Bitetti, chief executive officer of TDK Mediactive. "It has
developed into two synergetic entities, which can stand alone,
as well as provide mutual support: 'Shrek,' the DreamWorks
movie character, and 'Shrek,' the video game icon. Recognizing
this unique strength, our development efforts have shifted
from a license perspective to a video game franchise perspective,
and we will begin this fall to release additional 'Shrek'
titles for various platforms," added Bitetti. "The 'Shrek'
titles will offer the captivating characters in a diverse
base of immersive environments, game settings and categories."
On a related note, TDK reported a revenue increase
of 370% over the previous year, in addition to a profitable
year overall for the year ended March 31, 2002, largely attributed
to Shrek's sales.
