WHAT'S UP WITH NINTENDO?
May 26, 2000
Nintendo reported net profits for the year of
$500 million (down 1/3 on a yen-basis from 1999, due to disappointing
N64 sales and the strong yen).
The company is projecting that it will be back
to its 1999 levels in the coming year. However, in its 2001
sales forecast (ending March 31, 2001), Dolphin is nowhere
to be found.
This indicates the system will be launched some
time in 2001 in Japan, as well as possible second half 2001
North American and European/PAL launches, which would put
it head to head with X-Box. Of course, this should come as
no surprise considering how tight-lipped Nintendo has been
regarding its next generation console (not showing it at E3
was a very good indication of a later than previously reported
release).
Unfortunately, Nintendo still retains its stance
on unveiling Dolphin (and all associated information) at SpaceWorld
later this year, so while Sony and Microsoft reveal everything,
Nintendo and what it plans to do just remain big question
marks.
