DOLPHIN UNVEILING ANNOUNCED
October 1, 1999
Nintendo has set the date for the unveiling
of Project Dolphin. Of note, it is A LOT later than almost
everyone had anticipated, and pretty much puts the proverbial
kibosh on any chance of the system seeing the light of day
in 2000 as previously (and still) announced.
Nintendo Co. Ltd. said on Friday it plans to
give its first public demonstration of the Project Dolphin
next-generation game console and software in August next year.
Despite this, the company seemingly continues to want to try
to convince everyone that the system will come out in 2000.
This unveiling puts the system about a year
behind Sony, which of course would mean an early 2001 release,
with a fall release in North America and Europe. Evidentally,
Nintendo believes they can pull the wool over the public's
eyes long enough before they're finally forced to admit that
this system will probably not be released next year.
While the public has always been relatively
forgiving of Nintendo's delays in the past, it's obvious that
this will be delayed beyond the intended date, so now it becomes
a case of ethics (is Nintendo lying again or not?).
Additionally, given the date above, Sony will
have a 6 month head start before everything about Dolphin
is known, which might make people more willing to purchase
the PS2, even at the overly
high price.
