ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER
ZELDA
December 14, 1999
Recently, the Swedish gaming magazine "Super
PLAY" sat down with Shigeru Miyamoto to discuss different
topics related to Project Dolphin. Some time in the midst
of the interview, the topic of a Legend of Zelda game on the
Dolphin came up. According to Mr. Miyamoto, a Dolphin sequel
to Ocarina of Time is in the works.
"The Zelda which will be based on a new system
compared to Ocarina of Time, you have to wait five years for,"
said Miyamoto. "We are developing it for the Dolphin right
now. But when we discussed it, we concluded that five years
is an awfully long time. Those who played Ocarina of Time
in college will have graduated when the Dolphin game is released!
We think that's a long time. So we wanted to use the existing
Ocarina of Time engine and the Expansion Pak to make a sequel
to Nintendo 64 in the meanwhile."
Two key issues were raised here. 1) Zelda Dolphin
can be expected to be released somewhere around 2003-2005
(or later if Zelda 64's delays are any indication), which
is further into the life of the system than most of us were
hoping. 2) Nintendo's biggest games are going to be pushing
the Expansion Pak heavily. If you haven't gotten one already,
you're going to need one eventually to play the N64's last
great hurrahs.
