MORE PS2 DVD PROBLEMS
March 27, 2000
According to trade magazine EE Times, the RGB
analog output of the Playstation2 is being used to illegally
copy DVD movies onto normal video tape. Although Sony has
installed copy-protection technology to prevent such an act,
it's apparently already been hacked.
Perhaps the worst part of this is that Sony
could face a lawsuit from Hollywood over the matter (as you
may recall, a bit over a week ago, an issue regarding illegal
playing of international movies arose, which means this isn't
the first time legal troubles have surfaced for the PS2 DVD
player).
The Playstation2's analog RGB interface may
violate a DVD industry agreement that prevents any DVD player
from having an analog RGB interface (VHS tapes are analog),
and if so, movie developers could sue Sony claiming that the
PS2 makes it easy for consumers to pirate DVD movies (which
it seemingly is, considering this type of issue generally
doesn't occur on a newly released entertainment device so
quickly).
