PS2 HARD DRIVE REVEALED
June 8, 2000
At a conference today in Japan, Sony unveiled
two pieces of hardware. One was a portable PSX, the PSone
(more). The other
was a hard drive for its PS2.
The hard drive will be released this winter
in Japan as an external add-on to the system. A US version
is expected shortly after the launch and will most likely
use the internal drive bay and expansion unit.
The hard drive will allow for broadband (cable
and DSL) connections, which will be suitable for large downloads
(hopefully not patches). It also gives Sony the option of
selling games online (via download) should they so desire.
This is very likely considering Sega's plans and also Sony's
desire to expand its e-commerce reach.
