THQ SEES NO HARM
September 28, 2000
Responding to yesterday's announcement by Sony
concerning a decrease in the number of PlayStation 2 hardware
units expected to be made available this year, Brian Farrell,
president and CEO of THQ said, "Our plan has always been to
launch only one PlayStation 2 title, 'Summoner,' this year,
in conjunction with the Oct. 26 launch of Sony's new platform,
and 'Red Faction,' the first of many additional PlayStation
2 titles, early in 2001.
"From the beginning, our expectation was that
sales of games for the PlayStation 2 would account for less
than 5% of THQ's revenue for this year's fourth quarter. Accordingly,
our expectations for THQ's fourth-quarter performance are
unchanged as a result of Sony's revised launch schedule for
their exciting new system, nor do we currently anticipate
any impact on THQ's outlook for 2001."
Farrell also indicated that the company's WWF
SmackDown remains a top-10 PlayStation title in North America
and the United Kingdom and that THQ's WWF Royal Rumble continues
to rank among the top-five Dreamcast titles in both territories.
"Our WWF-branded wrestling games are domestic
and international best sellers, and represent a strong franchise
for THQ. We are optimistic that this trend will continue with
the exciting WWF releases scheduled for the holidays, including
our first online game, 'WWF With Authority,'" said Farrell.
