PS2 MODEM
November 8, 2000
Sun-Denshi has selected PCTEL's Solsis embedded
modem technology for its new OnlineStation, a small and compact
USB 56K device that provides Internet connectivity for the
PlayStation 2.
PCTEL's Solsis features the Texas Instruments
C5000 Digital Signal Processor, and provides manufacturers
such as Sun-Denshi with a communications solution that is
smaller than other existing modem designs. Its two-chip integrated
silicon CODEC/World DAA incorporates a patented multi-country
programmable configuration and is compliant and compatible
with local phone access in over 130 countries -- an important
consideration for an international interactive gaming appliance.
"In this era of connectivity, modems play a
critical role in a growing array of hand-held computers, set-top
boxes, gaming consoles and other electronic equipment and
communication appliances," noted Peter Chen, chief executive
officer of PCTEL. "PCTEL's Solsis technology is ideal for
these non-PC consumer appliances due to its very integrated
design. This technology is helping manufacturers such as Sony
and Sun-Denshi realize their vision of creating an exciting
new gaming environment via the Internet."
Sun-Denshi's OnlineStation external USB modem
is bundled with Sun-Denshi's EnjoyMagic, Internet application
software having browser and e-mail capability, enabling Sony
PlayStation 2 users to easily access to the Internet. The
product was unveiled at a Japanese game show in September,
and is expected to be available in Japan sometime in Q1 2001.
"Sun-Denshi's Internet application software,
exclusively designed for Sony PlayStation 2, will immerse
consumers in a new, exciting, highly advanced Internet environment,"
said Hiroaki Higashiya, manager for Sunsoft division of Sun-Denshi.
"With its open platform design, PCTEL's modem technology is
playing a key role in helping us bring Internet gaming products
to market quickly and cost-effectively."
"Our collaboration with PCTEL on the Solsis
modem is rewarding in the fact that we are seeing a rapid
adoption and deployment of this product," noted Mark Mattson,
C5000 marketing manager for Texas Instruments. "Sun-Denshi's
OnlineStation is just one of many products using this modem
solution that consumers will see on the shelves over the coming
months."
