PS2 SCAM BUST
December 11, 2000
As we reported earlier
this month, the Better Business Bureaus of the US and
Canada issued a warning about scams on the Internet offering
Playstation2 systems and software that they did not have and
had no intention of delivering.
Scott Byers of Moncton was busted at the airport
earlier today by authorities, presumably while he was trying
to flee the country. Police and the FBI have charged him with
running a scam where he requested credit cards numbers for
the supposed purchase of Playstation2's, in some cases at
inflated costs over list price.
It's good to see that action has been taken
and ps2storeusa.com and ps2storecanada.com have both been
shut down. However, it is suspected that this scam is just
one of those that consumers need to be aware of when looking
for the system.
The Canadian Better Business Bureau has gone
as far as to say don't bother looking for a PS2 online in
time for Christmas, or possibly even after, because no one
has them. If you do, make sure to buy from a reputable retailer
so you at least know that if you don't get one now, you will
get one when they have them in stock.
