What happened to CONCACAF?
Posted: Tue Jul 01, 2014 7:39 pm
Costa Rica is probably my #3 because CONCACAF, but Germany is automatically my #2 because heritage/I **** love Germany/I have a lot of German friends and my social media will be significantly more pleasant if they win

GO BELGIUM. When can I stop saying this?

Super Germans took care of business today. Feels good, man.

Germany 1-0 France
Not as decisive as most of Germany's previous games were, but France never looked like they had a serious chance of winning.
Brazil 2-1 Colombia
Colombia, on the other hand, easily could have won this. Brazil's second goal was off a free kick that the goalkeeper did an absolutely terrible job defending, and Colombia had several chances that barely missed.
Germany looks like a strong favorite for the semifinal.

Brazil will also be without Silva.

They'll be without Neymar as well:
That hit near the end of the game broke a vertebrae. It doesn't require surgery, but he'll obviously be out for much longer than the time they have.

This match wasn't good to my heart.
I'm glad the Netherlands got through. Both teams did well.

Argentina 1-0 Belgium
Costa Rica (3) 0-0 Netherlands (4)
All the interesting teams are out now. Guess I'm going for Argentina or Germany.

Soccer seems to be more popular in America now.

Soccer always gets a giant boost in America during the World Cup because everybody can rally behind the national team.
Caring about soccer during the World Cup, but I won't really think it's catching on unless people start watching more often than every four years.

It's getting more popular in general as well now that it's actually possible to watch the EPL without extra subscriptions, but the numbers from that aren't going to be anything like what the World Cup draws. It's still going to be a while before it stops being a niche sport to watch, I think.

I could eventually see soccer becoming the fourth-most popular sport in America, beating out hockey, but it'll still be a few years before that happens.

I don't think soccer is long-term marketable in the US since networks can't run enough commercials during a match.
There's also a catch-22. Our best athletes will only go to pro soccer if there's more money in it than the NBA/NFL/MLB. And that won't happen until the sport can be more commercialized. And sponsors won't care to find a creative way of doing this until more people watch. And more people won't watch until our best athletes go pro. And so on and so on.
And the American macho man attitude is the antithesis to soccer. We like seeing quick bursts of guys CRASHING INTO EACH OTHER vs. non-contact continuous sprinting where if someone gets tripped and grimaces they are a WHINY BITCH. Even baseball is losing ground to American football.
