Netherlands 3-2 Australia

Australia nearly pulled the upset of the century, but in the end missed too many chances.

Chile scores first at 20' against Spain. A win means both they and The Netherlands advance, eliminating Spain and Australia.

EDIT: 2-0 Chile at 43'. Spain look to become the second consecutive defending champion to fail to escape the group stage.

What is Del Bosque thinking bringing Torres on? Even keeping Costa is a better choice after the season he had.

EDIT: That's it. The Netherlands and Chile are through; Spain and Australia are out.

Spain 0-2 Chile

Cameroon 0-4 Croatia

Three of the goals came in the second half after Cameroon took a red card for an utterly pointless foul.

Colombia over Ivory Coast 2-1. I missed most of this game so I don't have much to say.

Uruguay over England 2-1. Wayne Rooney scored his first-ever World Cup goal to tie the game but Luis Suarez scored his second goal of the match at 85' to secure a victory. England now has a very long shot at getting out of pool play.

Japan 0-0 Greece

Greece played with 10 men from about 35' in a game that saw 41 fouls. Both sides had chances that really should've ended it.

Regardless, Colombia is through and the rest of the group stays alive.

Saw this in an article comments thread:

"I can't even bring myself to call it soccer and I live in the U.S. I just feel like it's always been called football, at least to every other country in the world. Is it the U.S. that originally called it soccer, or did that name come from somewhere else? Cause I honestly have no idea..."

Costa Rica 1-0 Italy

THEY ACTUALLY DID IT. Costa Rica are through for only the second time in history after taking down two of the best teams in the world.

Switzerland 2-5 France

Honduras 1-2 Ecuador

France technically haven't advanced yet, but with a +6 goal difference it'd take Ecuador beating them by at least 3 and Switzerland winning by at least 6 for them to be eliminated.

Ecuador become the first team to shift into an advancing position in the second round:

Code: Select all

              W L D GD PTS
Group A:
Brazil 1 0 1 +2 4

Cameroon 0 2 0 -5 0 (ELM)

Italy 1 1 0 0 3
Uruguay 1 1 0 -1 3
England 0 2 0 -2 0 (ELM)

Group E:
France 2 0 0 +6 6
Ecuador 1 1 0 0 3

Iran 0 1 0 0 1
Nigeria 0 1 0 0 1
Bosnia 0 1 0 -1 0

Group G:
Germany 1 0 0 +4 3
USA 1 0 0 +1 3
Ghana 0 0 1 -1 0
Portugal 0 0 1 -4 0

Group H:

South Korea 0 1 0 0 1
Russia 0 1 0 0 1
Algeria 0 0 1 -1 0
If group play ended today:

Brazil Netherlands
  vs. vs.
Chile Mexico

Colombia Costa Rica
  vs. vs.
Italy Ivory Coast

France Argentina
  vs. vs.
Iran/Nigeria Ecuador

Germany Belgium
  vs. vs.
Korea/Russia USA
There's a lot of interesting matchups for the round of 16 if these results hold.

Argentina advances to the next round with a 1-0 victory over Iran thanks to Messi.

Germany-Ghana tie 2-2, and the Group of Death got a helluva lot more interesting. USA advance if they win tomorrow.
