World Cup 2014 General Discussion

Admittedly, I don't know a ton about soccer, but I do know that team USA was put in a really rough group with Germany and Ronaldo Portugal.
Thoughts thus far? Who do you like to win it all? I might post groups at some point unless someone else wants to do the honors?

I'd prefer Spain, since being there during the 2010 run was what got me watching the sport in the first place. Really I'll take anyone that isn't Brazil, because their insistence on flopping every time anyone looks at them and repeatedly kicking the ball out ruins the game, even if they are obviously a legitimately talented team.
Group A: Brazil, Croatia, Mexico, Cameroon
Group B: Spain, Netherlands, Chile, Australia
Group C: Colombia, Greece, Côte d’Ivoire, Japan
Group D: Uruguay, Costa Rica, England, Italy
Group E: Switzerland, Ecuador, France, Honduras
Group F: Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iran, Nigeria
Group G: Germany, Portugal, Ghana, USA
Group H: Belgium, Algeria, Russia, Korea Republic

I was into soccer (er, football) about a year ago, but really haven't done/seen much of it since.
I suppose, go USA.

USA got so screwed with that group.

I've always been a Germany man.

I feel I should comment on this as a British man. Portugal or Argentina will win. That said the world cup is always a bitter disappointment as no player will ever bring their a game as they will not risk injury and not playing for their club as that is what earns the money. Lets face it they now get paid more than NFL players but only when they play for their club. Its a sad state of affairs but half of the really big hitters will probably be "injured" and wont even play. I have examples but that will just bore everyone so am gonna leave this rant now.

Brazil scored all four goals in the opener and only won by three.
also the call that gave Brazil their second goal was some BUSH LEAGUE **** but whatevs
Posted: Thu Jun 12, 2014 5:58 pm
That was just about the worst call I've ever seen. The one that took away Croatia's second wasn't much better.

Yeah, game should've ended 2-2 probably. Brazil got the luckiest **** breaks they could get to give them a win.

Refs off to a smashing start, eh?
Posted: Thu Jun 12, 2014 11:45 pm
There is no way that man wasn't bribed

Mexico 1-0 Cameroon
Both sides should have had penalties, and one of Mexico's disallowed goals was questionable. Awesome start for the refs continues.

Yeah these refs so far are Really Bad. I can maybe see one of those disallowed goals, but both goals being disallowed seems ridiculous

ANOTHER ******** penalty call leads to a goal. What the **** is up with these refs.
Edit: OH MY GOD THAT HEADER THOUGH

Spain 1-5 Netherlands
A combination of amazing shots from Van Persie and Robben and terrible goalkeeping by Casillas.
Bonus: Costa may get a retrospective suspension for a headbutt and Torres is still completely useless.

That header was fantastic yes, but oh my god Casillas's goalkeeping was awful
Posted: Fri Jun 13, 2014 4:56 pm
My reaction around 85 minutes when the Dutch were STILL shooting bullets at Casillas:

Chile 3-1 Australia
Only saw the second half. Australia flopped a lot. Kind of boring.

Yeah that was definitely the most boring match of the Cup so far. I turned it off a little bit after the second half started. Don't seem to have missed much.
