Worst Sports Logos of All Time

#1

Post by Gumchum » Tue Sep 23, 2014 3:32 pm

Because I love geeking out over sports logos and uniforms, I find myself constantly perusing sites like SportsLogos.net just browsing over the evolution of logo design. A lot of times, the teams have made some pretty great design choices.

Other times? Well, other times someone probably should have second-guessed it.

Post some of the worst sports logos/uniforms of all time, in your opinion. I'll get this parade of visual nausea rolling.

Detroit Tigers: Primary logo, 1927-1928
SWEET JEBUS. I know graphic design was pretty limited in pre-Depression times, what with no Adobe suites available to every front office, but you'd think Detroit could have come up with something better than what's comparable to a first-grader's refrigerator decoration. In fact, if you look closely at the teeth, you can see various gaps, differences in line thickness and areas where they couldn't even color inside the lines, so to compare this to a child's art is insulting to the child.

while we're on the subject of detroit

**** bubbles the lion. I actually never even realized how it looked like a Lion until I was older. Always thought the top paw was his nose, space between paws was mouth, and that paw + mouth was an eyeball. so it looked like some kind of weird pig creature more than a lion.
and that's the waaaaaaaaaay the news goes

Let's mix it up a little bit.

Cleveland Indians: Primary logo, 1946-1950
Granted, the current incarnation of Chief Wahoo is pretty bad in terms of offensiveness, but this makes the current logo look tame by comparison. I long for a day when the Indians can A) stop using Native American caricatures as their primary logos and B) can come up with a compelling logo that isn't totally boring, like the block C they have now.

I honestly like that logo better than the rainbow skyline logo.

Appalachian State: 2014-present. I'm not sure why the athletic director of Appalachian State thought it would be a good idea to make his five year old son's doodle into the Mountaineers logo. He looks like a rejected Simpsons character.

Also the Tigers have already been brought up twice, but how do you even defend this ****:

Agree on the BoSox logo, but man, I've always kinda liked that Padres logo. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, I guess.

My alma mater's current logo is pretty awful.
Image
Panthers? More like Sea Lions. This logo is such a bad ripoff of the Camolina Newtons, and what makes it worse is the previous logo was actually pretty cool, albeit a bit cliched.
