I would argue that the spirit of a racing game is about getting really good at its mechanics and having good enough control that you can pull off impressive maneuvers well, which may include being able to successfully pull off skips and glitches, and do them fast enough and well enough that you’re still better than other runners doing the same route as you. I spent most of my time in MK64 going off the tracks and exploring and dicking around, so this kind of out of bounds BS is entirely within the realm of how I enjoyed the game - playing around with its mechanics.

To be clear I’m not trying to argue that you personally have to be a-ok with glitches and skips in racing games, and I honestly agree that in marathons I’d rather watch them doing the full race. But I find calling it against the game’s spirit entirely subjective. It’s a game, we are all going to get different enjoyment out of how to play it.

And if to get the best time you gotta skip half the races then some nerd’s gonna do that. :p

I'd agree with you if this were Zelda or something, but the concept of racing has been pretty well established everywhere since thousands of years ago. Doesn't matter if you're racing people, horses, cars, whatever - you're supposed to stay on the track.

Can't argue with you if you're saying that the spirit of it is something different than every other kind of racing because it's a game and not reality, though.

Yeah that’s pretty much what I’m saying, my mistake if I worded it weird. If someone did that **** IRL I think we’d all be like “what the ****.” But in this sense it is a racing game, with programmed mechanics and limitations and exploits to master, and it’s a matter of “racing” with other people running the same route and game as you, not like against the AI who are rubber-banding anyway.

I still inherently agree the full game is better for a marathon. But I think if I personally were to ever speedrun MK64 I would learn the glitched route because it totally aligns with what I enjoyed about playing that game (which is dicking around and seeing what the game let me get away with), if that makes sense.

I’m at a friend’s birthday party today and we have SGDQ on in the background. Sonic’s birthday celebration was very topical lmao

Really excited for the MC run as it's one of my favorite Zelda games. That said, the ocarina glitch is FREAKY DEAKY and as such I prefer watching glitchless runs of this game

I'm going to be busy most of the week, so I'm probably going to be watching vods for the most part. But hopefully I'll be able to catch something cool live.

+1

Was surprised that the MC run skipped so little considering it was under 2 hours.

I was surprised too as they were discussing new techs and (also skips? Or am I misremembering?) such but the run is basically the one I remembered from a few years ago.

Was interesting to see that there are reliable strategies for Gleerok and Big Octorock, too. I thought they were RNG and the falling rocks sections were awful when I was doing a no damage run.
