I saw it today. My thoughts:
Spoiler.
I thought it was okay. Not a bad movie, but not all that remarkable either. There were a number of cool scenes, and a few surprises (Snoke is already dead? Really?), but most of the film was kind of bland. I didn't care for the detour on Casino Planet at all. Most of the humor fell flat. Too many screen-hogging and curiously-tame cute critters. Overall, I found it somewhat enjoyable, but would probably rank it at the bottom of all the non-prequel films.

Also, R.I.P. Admiral Ackbar.

Spoiler.
Okay, so

I think The Last Jedi does a lot of things better than The Force Awakens, but as an overall movie it's a weaker effort. I think the first act of the movie is pretty weak. Leia's force breathing (I'm assuming that's what she did) to survive space took me aback and the scene seemed silly overall. Teasing Leia's death overall there and then having her survive the movie was an... interesting decision to say the least. I kinda like that they did have her survive, but the death tease was weird.

I agree with Val that the casino excursion was a really weak part of the movie, which sucks because I really liked Rose and thought she had great chemistry with Finn. I'm not sure how much of a fan I am of adding romance to that pairing either.

I thought the humor overall worked well, though a few moments did fall flat. I loved all the weird and cute critters, personally and I want to pet a Porg. And then maybe eat the Porg.

I kind of loved how the movie surprised me. I thought revealing Rey's parents were nobodies was awesome and does a nice job of making it so this franchise isn't just all about the Skywalkers and the Solos. Having Rey not be connected by family to existing characters is a really nice choice.

I was also shocked that Snoke died, and I like that decision a lot too. I'm really interested to see where Kylo Ren goes in the next movie, because his first go at being leader of the dark side already has a huge failure in being tricked by Luke, and Hux clearly isn't happy about what's happening.

Speaking of Kylo Ren, how ****ing good was Adam Driver in this movie? Daisy Ridley, too. I'm happy that these actors have such awesome chemistry for characters who are each other's counterparts. I loved the scenes with them together both from different planets and then in the same spaces.

This also had some of my favorite battles in the series. I thought everything about the scene in Snoke's throne room with Rey and Kylo was great especially. The battle on the salt planet was also really cool and with the red clouds of smoke made me think of Mad Max: Fury Road quite a bit in the ways it popped off the screen.

I already said I loved Tran as Rose. Even though he was introduced through the weakest subplot in the movie, I liked Benicio Del Toro's character as well. As much as I like Laura Dern, I was disappointed in Holdo as a character and didn't think she made an impression until the last possible moment.
There's more I want to talk about but I think that's enough for now.

Phasma was cool in this one. I can't wait for her to inexplicably appear in Episode IX after somehow escaping a certain-death situation for the second time.

Spoiler.
And the award for most disappointing movie of 2017 goes to The Last Jedi, great job guys. Jokes aside,
I felt like the entire movie was meaningless. The whole "code breaker" sequence which took up a good portion of the film led to nothing, because they ended up going with their original plan anyway. Luke attempted to murder one of his pupils and destroyed everything that they fought for, which was super out of character and just weird. Not as weird as the scene where Leia survives an explosion in space and **** flew back to safety. Just like most of the film, it was pointless and led to nothing. Oh, but they killed Luke off in yet another meaningless scene. He projects a hologram of himself to survive a fight with Kylo and give the resistance time to escape and DIES ANYWAY. They should have had Luke survive to the next film and killed Leia instead, it would have been easier to do on their part since Carrie is dead irl, Luke would have gotten the spotlight I felt like they were building up to and they would have been able to easily close off the new trilogy. I have no clue what they'll do next, since most of the new characters are dead. I'm not excited, I'm just scared and confused.

And RIP Admiral Ackbar

A few more thoughts.
Spoiler.
  • Was General Hux this big a bitch in VII? I thought I remembered him being fairly menacing in the last film, but here it seems like he exists just to get slapped around by Poe, Kylo Ren and Snoke.
  • Whoever designed those bombers needs to be kicked out of the Resistance. "Getting hit has a high chance of causing the bomber to take out every allied craft in the vicinity via chain reaction" seems like a pretty tremendous flaw.
  • I've always wanted Leia to do something with the Force other than vaguely sensing things. And while I'm glad we finally got to see it, the execution... didn't quite live up to my hopes.
  • Seeing Yoda again was cool. And not just Yoda, but the impish Muppet Yoda from the original trilogy. It was honestly a bit jarring in a way, seeing how the last few times we saw him in the films was during the prequels, when his characterization (and appearance) were much different.
  • While I'm still not sure how I feel about Snoke kicking the bucket so suddenly, the ensuing battle with Rey, Kylo and the guards was great.
  • Holdo ramming the Resistance cruiser into the First Order fleet at light speed was **** awesome. Probably my single favorite scene from the movie.
  • The final confrontation between Luke and Kylo was also great. I definitely didn't see that twist coming. $50 says Luke will reappear as a Force ghost in IX.

I was legitimately surprised at some things in this movie.
Spoiler.
While everyone says "that whole codebreaker thing was pointless"... funny enough that was something entirely different for fiction. In the world of Fiction and Hollywood, the mavericks doing unconventional / million-to-one-odd plans are ALWAYS right. The people with authority are always wrong. And people you suspect of being a traitor are ALWAYS traitors. I was actually shocked to find that they didn't go through with the plan anyway and instead went through with the ORIGINAL plan - and that it also worked. It's actually rather different to show some "new boss" actually being right for a movie.

Also I don't believe Snoke is dead for a second. Seriously, who IS this guy? Why was Luke so afraid of him?

And I had to laug hat some of these "complaints" about Star Wars having "Forced diversity". Lol, you ever seen the cast? The only characters with names, personalities, and story arcs are... human. Star Wars is not just a galaxy of humans, dammit. All the non-humans are relegated to extras, being the exposition fairy, being comic relief*, or are just plain sitting there being completely unafraid of the whole galaxy-conquering threat that's supposedly out there.

*
Spoiler.
Does Chewbacca even add anything to the film? He's there for one gag... then sits in the Millennium falcon for the rest of the movi and has one scene in the climax to show "oh yeah I'm here too." Freaking C-3PO has more of an impact. C-3PO.

^
Spoiler.
I personally did like that the whole plot with the codebreaker failed. I liked having so many of my expectations defied in this movie, especially after The Force Awakens.

My problem with the side plot had more to do with the pacing and the fact that Canto Bight felt as out of place in Star Wars as that '50s diner from Attack of the Clones.
I think I like the movie more now that I've let things stew for a bit. Maybe not the best in the franchise, but still a good flick.

Saw it today. I liked it, but I definitely agree that significant parts of the plot feel pointless.

Also, it was really weird for a movie that goes out of its way to tell characters they're bad at military strategy to itself be complete nonsense on that front:
Spoiler.
- Now that they've acknowledged that a 1,000 ton vehicle hitting something at the speed of light is an unbelievably powerful, basically unstoppable weapon even when they've downplayed it so the main characters can survive, why did it take the entire movie for anyone to do that? Why did they let all their other capital ships run out of fuel with the captains inexplicably still on board instead of pulling that maneuver?

- Who makes a base with only one exit?

- What was the point of keeping the shuttle plan secret? Mutiny in that situation was basically inevitable even if you didn't have a hotshot.

- Why couldn't the First Order just have a few Star Destroyers jump somewhere else, then jump back in front of the Resistance?

- Since when does the Empire care about protecting its TIEs? They blew up the bridge (until it was fixed?) and Ren blew up all of the Resistance fighters, so what was there to even protect against?

- Why does their sudden safety-first approach to TIEs not include chasing ships through narrow canyons, which is probably the single greatest cause of death for Imperial pilots at this point?

- And most importantly: How the **** did the Republic go from controlling the galaxy to being routed that quickly? I know they lost some planets to Starkiller base at the end of the last movie, but surely that wasn't their entire navy. For that matter, how was the First Order able to build a fleet of Star Destroyers and dreadnoughts without being noticed? Why does everyone treat that like it's expected?

And to build on one of Val's points:

Why do the bombers even need to fly over the ship? Even if there's some silly in-universe reason why they can't just do the space thing and push the bombs at them, they've got guns. Surely those little balls could've gone in a cannon or something.

He was cooler in any given scene in the prequels than his entire presence in the original trilogy combined though. He caught a huge force-thrown object and hurled it back, did he do that in the original trilogy?

What I really want is for Nien Nunb to become part of the main cast in IX. Make it happen, Abrams.

I've been wondering about that too. Hyperdrive technology is apparently cheap and easy enough to manufacture that every spacecraft in the series, large and small, is equipped with it. Why bother constructing moon-sized planet-destroying battlestations or converting actual planets into even bigger planet-destroying battlestations when one could just build an arsenal of FTL missiles? It would be efficient, easy to mass-produce, and impossible to defend against.

I guess it's just a movie though. :jump:

So, rumour has it that Luke was killed off in post-production.
I heard he looked livid after seeing the movie the first time at the premiere.
Thoughts on likelyhood?
