This reminds me that I need to continue playing Dark Souls at some point.

imo difficult games are fun when the challenge comes from working out the best way to tackle any given scenario. trial and error (assuming there's minimal punishment for messing up) is fun when it lets you try different ways to do things but frustrating when you have to keep doing the exact same thing until you nail the execution.

I'm not personally a fan of Dark Souls and similar games.
Funny story: a friend of mine hates those types of games. He bought Nioh and immediately started complaining about it being too hard.

I think @PataPanfan should change his profile picture to that of James Franco as Tommy Wiseau.

My favorite hard game is Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. Very hard and fair traditional roguelike with an insane amount of automation and fairness features (like prompting for confirmation whenever you would perform almost any dumb action, like giving so much information about monster vulnerabilities and abilities for free that you get almost no new information from looking at a wiki) that almost no other game has. It's still substantially harder than, like, I Wanna Be The Guy (which is 50%+ fake difficulty.) Every single death outside the early game is and feels completely your fault because it always makes sure to kill you in a fair way, making it all the more soul-crushing. This game ruins your life and I've been playing it for 10 years

BotW isn't hard in the strictest sense but if you explore a lot early on before you make real progress you can run into these centaur things which I guarantee will wreck you.

That’s just the game’s way of communicating that you should build yourself up before going into that area again.

It feels kinda weird to play Dark Souls after playing Bloodborne.

I agree that type of difficulty is better but I think having a game fine tuned to where it keeps you engaged but never puts any undue burden on the player is better than either of those. In other words, there shouldn't be a situation in which you'll likely fail once you have the hang of the game.DarkZero wrote: ↑Thu Dec 28, 2017 7:56 pmimo difficult games are fun when the challenge comes from working out the best way to tackle any given scenario. trial and error (assuming there's minimal punishment for messing up) is fun when it lets you try different ways to do things but frustrating when you have to keep doing the exact same thing until you nail the execution.
Probably the best game to capture that perfect difficulty is Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus. After learning how to play and growing accustomed to the flow of battle it was never punishing, only challenging. I guess saying it was perfectly balanced isn't fair though, the beginning of the game is harder than it needs to be for someone just starting out, so the difficulty curve isn't smooth. If you push past the first area then you're good enough to finish the game, but I'm easily discouraged so I put it down for a while until I decided to try again.
Doesn't make the ensuing battle any less difficult. If I didn't know any better I'd say it was impossible. I battled it for an hour and never triumphed. If the game wants to communicate something that's fine but I should still be able to kill that thing with enough effort before I turn tail and run.

i finally beat all of the plateau shrines today bc i'm not very observant also i spent like half that time snowboarding.
i can definitely tell it's the same composer as animal crossing by the use of piano. as much as i like vgm i kinda dig not having a whole lot to listen to. i feel like i could listen to podcasts while playing this game and not really miss much audio-wise

I just watched the first episode of FLCL and, well, I should not have taken hydrocodone-based cough medicine before doing that.

I think I have one more dose of this stuff, and then it's just dollar store-branded painkillers and the usual day-to-day stuff.
Also, I cannot tell whether I am very tired or very awake when I take this.

So the drugs didn't make FLCL better MeowMan? That's honestly kind of surprising... I also lied about what I was watching first, since I started watching Watamote and Madoka Magica. All I have to say about the former is that I love Tomoko, and for the latter I love Homura. And both shows are great.
