As helpful as Bard has been, I did the Lenna-less segment without it since it's my least-vital job. The Antlion went down easily thanks to Old and Water Scrolls. I also picked up Mana's Paean at the Library of Ancients.

I am once again thankful that I have multi-target attacks, as my scrolls quickly did away with the Gargoyles. The interior of the pyramid was more tedious than dangerous, though I am starting to run dangerously low on healing items.

Image

Like the pyramid, Melusine wasn't that deadly, but did take a while to get through. Depending on the results of her Barrier Change, I would either focus on spamming physical attacks/Shuriken, or spamming Comet.

Airship acquired. The sandbox is now open.

Four Job Fiesta Summary
Val - 1. Knight 2. Time Mage 3. Bard 4. Ninja
ML - 1. Thief 2. Summoner 3. Blue Mage 4. Dancer
Kat - 1. Monk 2. Red Mage 3. Black Mage 4. Beastmaster
X-3 - 1. Black Mage 2. Mystic Knight 3. ??? 4. ???
Squeege - 1. ??? 2. ??? 3. ??? 4. ???

We deactivated the internet at our house since we’re moving tomorrow, so I can’t upload the screenshots I’ve been taking. But I’ve made a lot of progress, catching up to Val even.

I got Carbuncle in Exdeath’s Castle, because of course I did. That summon will be invaluable. In fact, it has already been invaluable, as it was basically the reason I was able to survive Exdeath this time around. That battle was tough, and setting up Carbuncle + Golem took several turns to do it properly without getting KO’d, but once I got the summons up I was able to get into a good, safe loop to lock him down.

Summons make the gargoyles pretty trivial. Melusine was really tough, though, just because I had such a hard time figuring out her weakness with enough time to actually do damage to her. If I had thought it through more, I would have changed jobs a little bit to have 3 Magic users to expedite the process. As it stood, though, Carbuncle kept me safe and I was able to very slowly but surely whittle her down.

Wendigo freaking sucks. Worst boss in the game.

I don’t plan on doing Fork Tower this time around, because why would I? I don’t have the right classes for Flare and Holy, and I DEFINITELY don’t have the physical strength to beat the Minotaur. So that’ll be one side quest I’m skipping.

After giving this some thought I think I'm going to keep my beastmaster roll. Krile can be my beefed-up BST when I get her. Bartz Garfin can be a monk who also captures things. Lenna is still set to be my dualcasting BM and Faris can be my RM with black magic to raise her MP.

Haven't played any more since I rolled as I wanted some time to think.

Can one person capture and have another release?

Pretty sure captures are individual. Like, Garfin catches a Goblin and Krile catches a Mythril Dragon; Butz would release the Goblin and Krile the Mythril Dragon. But I didn't play around with it enough my first year to be certain; I got stuck too early lmao

Running a few errands now that I have the airship.
  • The first thing I did was head to Moore and grab the Brave Blade. Since I've never run from a battle, it retains its default 150 attack power, making it far and away the strongest weapon in the entire game. And with double-handed...
    Image
  • Next I went to the Phantom Village. There I upgraded my equipment, picked up Quick and Banish, and played the final piano.
  • Then I traveled to Crescent and learned Sinewy Etude (good) and Hero's Rime (fantastic).
  • Finally, I entered the Sealed Castle and grabbed some legendary weapons. As my Ninja is now capable of equipping knight swords, I grabbed Excalibur and Sasuke's Katana. These will likely be my Ninja's ultimate weapons, unless I'm somehow able to take down Shinryu and earn Ragnarok. For my third legendary weapon I nabbed Apollo's Harp. It probably won't get much use since my Bard is not going to be doing much fighting, but it may be situationally useful since it does huge damage to dragons and undead.

Image

As you can see, my Knight does ridiculous amounts of damage now. My Ninja does only slightly less. (Wendigo took five attacks before biting the dust.) And with my Bard raising everyone's levels, and my Time Mage providing support... I think it's going to be a fun endgame.

By the way, @Marilink, are there any summons you're planning on skipping/have already skipped? I'm assuming since you're not doing Fork Tower that means no Leviathan.

Oof, your final party is a lot more potent than mine. That Knight is scary. And I’ve definitely run from some battles. Whoops.

I do plan on getting Leviathan, Bahamut, and Phoenix, if i can. Bahamut might be too big of a challenge, though I’m willing to grind a little.

I’m curious, why would skipping Fork Tower lead me to skip Leviathan? Is there a connection between Fork Tower and Istory Falls that I’m forgetting?

IIRC, you need the submarine to reach Istory Falls, and to get the submarine you have to beat Fork Tower.

Hm. Good call. I thought you could get to Istory with the black chocobo, but I honestly kinda forgot.

Maybe I can make Fork Tower happen. I’ll just have to be very careful with my Thief and Dancer on the physical side of the tower. I’m hatching a plan to get a Dancing Dagger (sold my other one before considering this) and equip Lamia’s Tiara on Faris as a Thief, so that she can get Swords Dances as much as possible. then making Butz my Dancer. I think it could work.

Image

Ifrit got nuked by Ice 2. Byblos put up more of a struggle but not enough of one to be a problem.

Image

Sakaguchi must have made this game after a really bad cruise or something.

Image

This was a lot easier than I expected it to be. Maybe it was because I just Aqua Raked it when I first played the game.

Image

I forgot this boss existed.

Image

Smurfed!

Image

Not Smurfed! I have no way of running away from this fight so the only way to get the treasure will be through some save-scumming. IIRC I'll have to do that before World 2.

Image

The nerve. Anyway I fought Ramuh but forgot to get a picture.

Image

Adam Timmy hit hard but still went down pretty quickly. I didn't get a picture of Sol Cannon because of how IMMERSED I was but it took two tries due to poor Nightengale luck.

Image

As you can probably tell this fight was another pain. Galuf continues to be the unorthodox RNG healer, go figure.

And with that I have access to my final job, which is...
Spoiler.
Image

Damn!
Spoiler.
Image

Well, at least I'll look cool. Dragoon is a ridiculously simple job even for this game, so it doesn't have that much synergy with the other jobs to my understanding. At best there's Black Mage+Lancet or something. But hey, possible Shinryuu cheese?

So I ended up having a little trouble with the Fork Tower myself. The bosses, in particular. Minotaur was a simple fight, but he hit so hard that I had to stop and heal almost every turn. I also made the dumb mistake of leaving my Ninja equipped with Excalibur, which, being Holy-elemental, would actually heal Minotaur. I was one hit away from a wipe when the boss went down.

Omniscient was a tougher fight. The only offensive ability in my possession that wouldn't cause the boss to use Reset was Comet, which dealt a piddly 500 damage on average (out of Omniscient's 17,000 HP). I had my Bard singing for the entire fight while my Time Mage cast Comet repeatedly. It was slow, but it worked... until the boss's HP got low and it started casting third-level elemental spells. Faris got KO'ed by one such spell, leaving Lenna helplessly and obliviously singing by herself.

Image

Party Wipe Count: 5

I thought over my party setup for a bit and then tried the tower again. This time I gave my Ninja and Knight !Image, which trivialized the fight with Minotaur. For the Omniscient fight, I equipped my Time Mage with a Reflect Ring I was lucky enough to acquire back when I did the Barrier Tower. The battle went much the same as before, only this time once Omniscient began casting high-level magic, they were reflected right back in his face.

Submarine acquired!

I went and tackled the Great Sea Trench. On one hand, battles were really easy since all of the enemies there are undead, and Requiem deals a ton of damage to them. On the other hand...

Image

LAVA. It would've been nice to have a Geomancer here, because walking through this stuff drops everyone's HP to 1 in just a few steps. Since the battles were so easy I managed to stay alive though, even when I got caught with low health.

Nereid, Phobos and Triton would've been a difficult fight if they weren't undead, and I didn't have Requiem. They went down, I got Meteor.

Spent all my money on Shuriken and healing items... next up is the Rift.

No gameplay update, but I wanted to let you all know that you all owe it to yourselves to pick up the FFV book by Chris Kohler from Boss Fight Books. It’s easily the best of the ones I’ve read. He even has a section on the FJF.

Here’s an excerpt, too: https://kotaku.com/the-friendly-rivals- ... 1797143910

Just entering the Forest of Moore. Things are going pretty swimmingly and bosses are going down pretty easily. Dragoon is actually a nice backup Break Blade user due to being able to use daggers, and unsurprisingly Jump saved my bacon during Titan and Chimera Brain. I got really lucky during Barrier Tower too: Killer Bow instakilled three dragons and I got a Coral and Wall Ring.

Entered the Rift, pretty well-stocked on items and gear. No major issues for the most part. Calofisteri took a bunch of Shuriken to the face and went down.

I attempted Omega... The plan I came up with required a little job grinding, but I taught !Sing to everyone who didn't already know it. The idea was to have everyone using Romeo's Ballad repeatedly to stun Omega and keep it from attacking, while one person in the party dealing damage to it. The singing part worked remarkably well, as Omega was kept pinned down most of the time. The problem was dealing damage to it, due to the boss's high magic defense and utterly ridiculous physical defense. Even my Knight, wielding the strongest sword in the game two-handed, deals a whopping 0 damage per strike. Meteor only does a few hundred damage on average. Throwing Fuma Shuriken the best attack I have access to, doing about 1500 damage per throw, but they are in terribly short supply, and other thrown items only deal damage in the low to mid hundreds. Omega has over 55,000 HP, mind you.

Without access to powerful attacks like Thundaga, or the ability to use !Mix to lower Omega's defense, I simply can't deal damage to Omega quickly enough. And as helpful as Romeo's Ballad is at keeping the boss stunned, it still gets a few attacks in through the cracks, and it only has to use Encircle once for my battle strategy to crumble. I made a few attempts, but in the end I couldn't make it work. :frown:

Man I hate this boss. All of them are immune to Ice/Lightning and one is immune to Fire. Just an unpleasant boss.

Image

****, I broke the rules in a cutscene. RIP GARluf.

Image

Pretty simple fight. He didn't use Frog Song which was good.

Image

This on the other hand was a pain. I used strategy and cunning, but I'd always lose the dice roll eventually. I had one run where I had multiple zombie meatshields and he still got me with the dreaded Perfectly Normal Slash Attack. Exdeath is simple, but he hits like a truck. Thus, I had to meet brute force with brute force in the form of MAGIC SPAM. Forget Jumping, Drain Sword (LMAO) (edit: as in the Mystic Sword spell, I can't actually equip Drain/Blood Sword with this party) or rolling for Nightingale, just spam tier 3 elemental spells. This time, I managed to kill him before losing a critical dice roll.

Float + Reflect Ring + Catastrophe = one very easy boss battle.

Few of the bosses in the Rift so far have given me much trouble. My only major concern is keeping everyone healed, which is seriously eating through my recovery items. I may have to leave the Rift to restock.

The next week is going to be busy for me, but I should be able to finish this run in early August at the latest.

Pyamid: I opted to go without a Mystic Knight here, because I wanted Hunter AP. Worked well enough.

Melusine: Surprisingly, I got this in one try. I just guessed right enough times I guess. I unsealed Holy Lance, Yocihi's Bow and Wizard Rod, and that's really all I need.

Phoenix Tower: I made a beeline here for those sweet Magic Pots. Of course, when I got to the top I realized that had to go all the way back down...Afterwards I went and got the Chicken Knife. X-Fight doesn't proc its "run away" effect, so...

Wendigo: Surprisingly, I also got this in one try. The thing is, X-Fight is nuts. Even if it hits all four Wendigos it doesn't proc the counter-attack.

Fork Tower: The first time around Minotaur or whatever got blown out but I got wiped out by Omniscient. I tried again will Wall Rings (I got another drop from an enemy in the Phoenix Tower) and that was that.

Undersea Trench: Now, this was a bit annoying due to the lava. Holy Spellblade instakills these enemies though. As for the terrible trio, despite going in with 1 HP it was managable for two factors. One, Wall Ring. Two, Momonga works on them, if it procs INSTEAD OF NIGHTINGALE 80 TIMES INA ROW. Another oddity is that if Delta Attack gets reflected it kills one of them and seems to screw up their "kill us all at once" script temporarily. Anyway, I got them in one try, then got wiped out on my way back to the save point. Then I took them out again after a longer, unluckier fight.

Gogo: Hey, now I have X-Fight on two characters. Unfortunately, Yoichi's Bow does a lot less damage than the Chicken Knife and the animation is a lot slower.

Leviathan: Bolt 3 Spellblade+X-Fight did about 5200~ per hit. Ouch!

Odin: X

Bahamut: He got me with a Megaflare the first time, so I went back in with the Wall Rings...and killed him before he could use it again. Oh well.

Omega: Work in process. I hit my head against it for like an hour and it seems like I'd need ridiculously perfect RNG between Rocket Punches, Atomic Rays and Nightengale to get a kill. Not helping matters is that Omega absorbs Holy meaning Dragoon is basically dead-weight. As I am now I do about ~24K per Bolt 3 Spellblade X-Fight, and Omega has 55k HP. Maybe if I get a bit stronger this will be feasible.

And, most importantly:

I wrote a nice 900 word essay before even attempting Neo Exdeath but I'll try to trim the fat.

Image

This is the ultimate spear, a rare steal from Crystal Dragons and Jura Aevis. You don't need a Thief though, just a Thief Knife. I stole from the Jura Aevis because they're just there in the basement, chilling. It's a really, really good idea to get this for two reasons.

Image

After beating Twintania I grinded on Iron Giants for a bit. It was an annoying grind for several reasons but as you can see it paid off. The damage increase made it go from "need miraculous RNG" to "need great RNG."

Necrophobe almost completely hard-countered my team (multiple targets with Reflect) so he was a pain. His barriers are vulnerable to Petrify though, so Break Blade still makes things a lot easier.

Image

Hoo boy. Fighting Shinryuu honestly was fruitless, but using the Wonder Wand as a makeshift Berserk Staff let me do the Berserk strat. At that point it came down to avoidance RNG (Shields and Elf Capes), which still took a good number of tries. Dragon Lance+Jump does about 8000 a pop, whereas the Holy Lance...heals him.

Image

Unsurprisingly this took several tries. Several long, painful tries. Tree!Death is simple, only real thing to look out for is White Hole which can be stopped with Aegis Shields.

Neo Exdeath on the other hand is a long, long fight. I recorded the winning attempt and Tree!Death took three minutes whereas Neo took about 15. X-Fight isn't just bad on this fight, it's borderline-atrocious. It'll often target parts of Neo that are already dead, and you really don't want to attack one part too much. So, my strategy:

-Break Blade the bottom part ASAP because it's vulnerable. This also gets rid of Almagest.
-Jump on the top part, it's considered a dragon so it takes 8000 damage and when it dies Grand Cross is gone.
-Use Wizard Rod-boosted Tier 3 Black Magic on all four/three parts. This does only about ~1500 to each part but is pretty crucial for keeping the left and right parts at close levels of health. When there's only one part is left he starts spamming Meteor each turn, enough said.
-Rez and heal liberally, bust out that Elixir reserve.

He got one Meteor off and that was enough to almost end it. Butz actually got hit by one for about 982 damage. Afterwards he jumped for the killing blow.

Image

Now I don't have to feel guilty!

Image
Black Mage was the powerhouse for most of the run. However, during most of endgame it kinda just sat around due to how strong X-Fight is comparatively. At least it got to shine a bit in the final battle.

Image
While I won't deny this job is great, I'm personally not that huge of a fan. It was basically dead weight in a lot of earlier fights compared to what the other guys could do. Still, Break Blade is crazy useful, Flare Sword hits like a truck, it syncs perfectly with X-Fight and being able to use a shield is always good.

Image
The secret MVP. X-Fight speaks for itself, but Animals was very good for the whole run. Nightingale is a free group heal, and Momonga works on a lot of enemies. On a strange note, you apparently get new animals at levels 50 and 60 which seems way past where anyone would end the game at. I guess they really wanted people to grind for the superbosses and Neo. Oh well.

Image
Probably the "weakest" job I pulled, but it's MY weakest job. Jump is decent damage and utility, it can use a shield, and it looks cool. It wasn't amazing but it never felt like dead weight.

So overall I think this was a fun intro to the challenge, probably because I got a nice, easy mode draw. Next time I'll go for a harder category.
